{"id":14698,"date":"2018-03-01T15:08:53","date_gmt":"2018-03-01T15:08:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=14698"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:59:08","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:59:08","slug":"stop-gkn-takeover-bristol-workers-demo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=14698","title":{"rendered":"Stop GKN takeover"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Workers from some of GKN\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s biggest customers joined their colleagues from GKN today (March 1) to call on Theresa May\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s government to block Melrose\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s debt-fuelled takeover bid of the British-based engineer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The show of solidarity by members of Unite the union at the Airbus site in Filton, Bristol came as GKN workers from the across the country to lobby MPs in Westminster yesterday (February 28).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fearful a takeover by Melrose could lead to GKN being sold off piecemeal and jobs cut or shipped abroad, the GKN workers in aerospace, automotive and defence are calling to block the bid in the national interest.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bGKN can trace its roots back over 100 years at the Filton site in Bristol,&#8221; said Unite regional officer Steve Preddy. &#8220;It is feared that this hub of ingenuity, which has been home to iconic aircraft like Concorde, could be hit and jobs lost if Melrose succeeds with its debt-fuelled takeover of GKN.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Melrose debt fears<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWorkers from across aerospace and some of GKN\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s biggest customers are united in believing that GKN in Melrose\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s hands would be bad for business and bad for workers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bGKN will be saddled with over \u00c2\u01411.3 billion of debt if Melrose succeeds, while its advisors would pocket upwards of \u00c2\u0141140 million in fees,&#8221; he added. &#8220;Workers are fearful that they will pay for this debt fuelled payday with their livelihoods with technology and jobs shipped abroad.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe message from our members across aerospace is clear.
