{"id":14708,"date":"2018-03-01T15:35:49","date_gmt":"2018-03-01T15:35:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=14708"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:59:07","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:59:07","slug":"14708-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=14708","title":{"rendered":"Brexit car threat"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Hundreds of thousands of automotive jobs will be at risk if the UK crashes out of the EU with no deal, MPs have warned.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A hard Brexit will devastate the industry, the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) select committee report found.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite echoed the report\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s findings, which matches the union\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s own research, and called for comprehensive deal that ensures barrier free access to the EU.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The report concluded that a \u00e2\u20ac\u0098no deal\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Brexit would put hundreds of thousands of UK jobs at risk and threaten hundreds of millions of pounds of inward investment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The report further found that non-tariff barriers in the form of increased bureaucracy and border delays will dramatically affect the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s competitiveness.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Automotive supply chain<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Just a minute\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s delay per vehicle at UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s borders would have severe effects on the automotive supply chain.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Every day, 1,100 lorries carrying automotive parts arrive from the EU, with many automotive companies operating a just-in-time operation with assembly sites storing just 20 minutes of materials.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The BEIS committee recommended that the UK still follow EU car industry rules after Brexit, which is at odds with Theresa May\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s latest Brexit approach of \u00e2\u20ac\u015bambitious managed divergence\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>BEIS committee chair Rachel Reeves said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bRegulatory consistency and friction-free trade benefits car companies, consumers and car-workers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe prime minister now needs to ensure common-sense pragmatism prevails and spell out the government&#8217;s intention to seek continued regulatory and trading alignment with the EU in the automotive sector.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Secure trading agreements call<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Unite assistant general secretary Tony Burke pointed out that the best way to protect the automotive industry is to secure trading arrangements that encompass the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s entire manufacturing base.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis report is a welcome acknowledgment of Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s long-held position that a \u00e2\u20ac\u0098hard\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Brexit would be a mortal blow for the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s automotive industry,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Burke.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt is absolutely essential for the well-being of the car industry that the UK retains tariff free access after it leaves the European Union. The only sensible way of achieving this is for the government to negotiate a customs union.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe car industry would be hugely affected by a \u00e2\u20ac\u0098hard\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Brexit but there should not be a specific deal just for this sector. It is essential that all the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s manufacturing base is protected by future barrier free access.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Burke also said that is essential for the future of the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s car industry to maintain regulatory alignment with EU after Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe government must act on this report\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s findings, rather than trying to ignore reality. If it cannot negotiate a deal, which defends hundreds of thousands of highly skilled manufacturing jobs, then it must step aside for a Labour government which will.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite leader Len McCluskey said that is not just in the manufacturing and auto industries that \u00e2\u20ac\u015bTory dithering and division\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 is causing real concern.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bInvestment is drying up, and our BrexitCheck surveys are finding that some employers are using the uncertainty to hold down wages,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 McCluskey said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bJeremy Corbyn has said that Labour would negotiate to save the trading arrangements on which jobs depend, end freedom of movement and take on the greedy bosses to ensure \u00e2\u20ac\u0098a rate for the job, not a race to the bottom\u00e2\u20ac\u2122. Unite welcomed his pledges.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt was a message that united business and the unions.
