{"id":14732,"date":"2018-03-06T17:01:07","date_gmt":"2018-03-06T17:01:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=14732"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:59:07","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:59:07","slug":"sainsburys-pay-offer-slated-unite","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=14732","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Robbing Peter to pay Paul&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Thousands of workers at supermarket giant Sainsbury\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s face \u00e2\u20ac\u0098a robbing Peter to pay Paul\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 pay offer, Unite said today (March 6).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite said that that the firm\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s proposal to increase pay to \u00c2\u01419.20 an hour for workers at Sainsbury\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s 1,400 stores from September would be eroded\u00c2\u00a0 by such \u00e2\u20ac\u0098strings\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00c2\u00a0 as removing premium pay for Sunday working. The normal current rate is \u00c2\u01418.00 an hour.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite will be holding a consultative ballot of members across the UK from the end of March, with a recommendation to reject.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe are in a classic \u00e2\u20ac\u0098robbing Peter to pay Paul\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 situation, which we don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t think will benefit our members in the long-run,&#8221; said\u00c2\u00a0Unite acting national officer for food and drink Bev Clarkson.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bSainsbury\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s has announced its intention of increasing the basic rate of pay to \u00c2\u01419.20 per hour from September 2018. This would take their rate to the highest in the industry which Unite welcomes as a positive move for our members.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><em><strong>Perk sacrifices<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bHowever, there will be no further increase in salary until 2020 and given what our members have been asked to give up in return for this\u00c2\u00a0 headline rate, the overall package doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t look that attractive,&#8221; Clarkson explained.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur members will have to make a number of &#8216;sacrifices&#8217; to secure this rate of pay which includes the removal of paid breaks and Sunday premium pay, as well as a number of changes to the attendance policy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite believes these \u00e2\u20ac\u0098strings\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 will offset any rise in basic pay. We will be holding a consultative ballot of our members at the end of the month.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe are recommending rejection and will decide on the next steps after our members have expressed their views in the consultative ballot, which should be known by the end of April.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Unite represents more than 12,000 members working for Sainsbury&#8217;s.
