{"id":14754,"date":"2018-03-08T14:21:20","date_gmt":"2018-03-08T14:21:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=14754"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:59:07","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:59:07","slug":"unite-durham-international-womens-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=14754","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Determination for change&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite Community activists in Durham are highlighting the disproportionate effect of Tory cuts on women during International Women\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Day today (March 8).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite Community Durham branch activists are holding women\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s workshops throughout the day on welfare rights and <a href=\"unitelive.org\/tag\/universal-credit\">Universal Credit<\/a> at the County Durham Socialist Clothing Bank.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Branch secretary Dawn Wilson said members were inspired by the recent explosion of women\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s rights activism, exemplified by the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search\/?q=(MeToo\">#MeToo<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search\/?q=(TimesUP\">#TimesUp<\/a> movements.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis year, International Women\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Day comes on the heels of unprecedented global movement for women\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s rights, equality and justice. Sexual harassment, violence and discrimination against women has captured headlines and public discourse, propelling a rising determination for change,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Wilson.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bInternational Women\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Day 2018 is an opportunity to transform this momentum into action, to empower women in all settings, rural and urban, and celebrate the activists who are working relentlessly to claim women\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s rights and realise their full potential.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Women and austerity<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Wilson added, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIn recognition that a hugely disproportionate amount of the Tories\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 austerity agenda has fallen on women&#8217;s shoulders we will be hosting workshops on welfare rights and Universal Credit.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Members will also be handing out sanitary products and conducting seminars on tackling period poverty.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The clothing bank, set up in 2014 with help from <a href=\"unitelive.org\/tag\/unite-community\">Unite Community<\/a>, provides assistance to unemployed and vulnerable people throughout the area, as well as those in low paid work and people struggling with welfare cuts and benefit sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, volunteers at the clothing bank were <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/overcoming-austerity-together\/\">presented with the Durham County Council Chairman\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Award<\/a> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the county\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s highest civic honour.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite Community regional coordinator John Coan praised the activists for their hard work and dedication.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bDawn, along with all the other Unite Community activists in the area, tirelessly provide help and assistance to those in their community who need it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s no surprise that the Durham activists are doing their bit for gender equality on International Women\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Day. Helping others is what they do everyday of the year.
