The normal current rate is \u00c2\u01418.00 an hour.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/tag\/sainsburys\/\">Sainsbury\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s<\/a> convenor and Unite executive council member, Tracey Ashworth, said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis kind of scenario is happening at nearly all the major retailers now, including Morrison\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s, Tesco, M&amp;S and Waitrose.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The trend accelerated after the government raised the minimum wage from \u00c2\u01416.70 to \u00c2\u01417.20 in 2016. At the time, Unite raised the issue of car parts manufacturer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2016\/apr\/16\/employers-claw-back-national-living-wage-cuts-pay-perks\">Toyoda Gosei<\/a> putting an end to paid breaks for workers as well as fish processor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2016\/apr\/16\/employers-claw-back-national-living-wage-cuts-pay-perks\">Seachill<\/a> increasing the hourly wage but cutting overtime from double to time and a quarter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>B&amp;Q workers were told the increase in the national <a href=\"unitelive.org\/tag\/minimum-wage\">minimum wage<\/a> would be met with cuts to Sunday and bank holiday pay and bonuses, while Caf\u0102\u00a9 Nero, ASDA and John Lewis scaled back food perks for staff.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>&#8216;Double whammy&#8217;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Ashworth said that Sainsbury\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s members were initially pleased when the pay rise was announced.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bEverybody thought \u00e2\u20ac\u0098great \u00c2\u01419.20 an hour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122. They didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t realise that it came with strings attached. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not just the paid breaks and the Sunday premium, there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s alterations to the nightshift premium, skills payments and bonuses,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Ashworth explained.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bLots of our members claim working tax credits and in-work benefits. This could potentially take them out of that because of the increase in the hourly wage. So they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d get a double whammy \u00e2\u20ac\u201c not only losing their premiums and other benefits but getting taken out of tax credits as well.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ashworth added, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a whole raft of things we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re having to give up for this \u00c2\u01419.20 an hour. These \u00e2\u20ac\u0098robbing Peter to pay Paul\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 deals are becoming an all too common method for employers to get out of giving proper pay rises.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite will be holding a consultative ballot of Sainsbury\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s members across the UK from the end of March, with a recommendation to reject the deal.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Acting national officer for food and drink Bev Clarkson said the conditions of the deal mean it \u00e2\u20ac\u015bwill not benefit our members in the long-run\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere will be no further increase in salary until 2020 and given what our members have been asked to give up in return for this\u00c2\u00a0headline rate, the overall package doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t look that attractive,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Clarkson said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite represents more than 12,000 members working for Sainsbury\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s.
