Scotland Yard has today (March 23) admitted police officers sent to spy on trade unionists passed information to construction industry blacklisters \u00e2\u20ac\u201c prompting a crescendo of demands for a full public inquiry.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In the light of the admission, Unite will now be investigating whether it is appropriate to pursue the police in legal action on behalf of its members who were blacklisted.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

After years of police denials, the Met confessed that Special Branch officers colluded with a network of blacklisters<\/a>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Deputy assistant commissioner Richard Martin was finally forced to admit the truth, in response to a compliant made in 2012 to the Independent Police Complaints Commission from the Blacklist Support Group.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For four decades, major construction firms such as Balfour Beatty and Robert McAlpine funded a secret blacklist<\/a> of more than 3,200 trade unionists, many of whom were denied work simply because they had raised safety concerns.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Martin admitting the police\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s involvement in blacklisting in a letter to the Blacklist Support Group\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s lawyers.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It stated, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bAllegation: Police, including Special Branches, supplied information that appeared on the Blacklist, funded by the country’s major construction firms.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe report concludes that, on the balance of probabilities, the allegation that the police or Special Branches supplied information is ‘proven’.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bMaterial revealed a potentially improper flow of information from Special Branch to external organisations, which ultimately appeared on the blacklist.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Despite the admittance, no action further action will be taken the police officers involved.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Report withheld <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Martin said the police\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s report into the collusion was completed in 2016, but had been withheld \u00e2\u20ac\u015bdue to its sensitivity\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

Blacklist Support Group secretary Dave Smith said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bSix years we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve waited! The report has sat on the commissioner\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s desk for the past two years.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWhen we first talked about police collusion in blacklisting, people thought we were conspiracy theorists. With this admission from the Met Police, our quest for the truth has been vindicated.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Smith added, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIf it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s happening in construction, the very same thing will be happening in other sectors.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell, who first raised the possibility of police collusion in Parliament, said it was \u00e2\u20ac\u015babundantly clear that various arms of the state, including the police\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 were involved in blacklisting.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He added, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is one of the hidden scandals of the abuse of civil liberties in our country that needs to be recognised fully and addressed. The people involved need to be brought to book.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unite assistant general secretary Gail Cartmail echoed McDonnell\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s call and demanded a full public inquiry into blacklisting.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Disgraceful\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is a major breakthrough. The police have finally been forced to admit what we already knew, that they were knowingly and actively involved in the blacklisting of construction<\/a> workers. It is disgraceful that they have chosen to sit on this admission of guilt for so long,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Cartmail said.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis admission is yet another reason why we need a full public inquiry into blacklisting. It is also why it is absolutely essential that the inquiry into\u00c2\u00a0undercover policing led by Judge Mitting<\/a> is entirely transparent. That inquiry\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s primary focus must be about exposing the abuses that undercover police officers were responsible for, rather than protecting the identities of the police officers involved.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In 2016, Unite secured \u00c2\u014110m compensation<\/a> for 256 members who were blacklisted by some of the country\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s biggest construction firms. There may be ramifications for that case because the police concluded officers colluded with the blacklisters at the same time as court action was going ahead, but suppressed the knowledge until 2018.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Similarly, the revelations could also be of relevance to a separate High Court action the union has recently launched on behalf of 70 members who were blacklisted by the Consulting Association.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unite assistant general secretary Howard Beckett said,\u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe latest revelations which have confirmed that the police were both actively spying on construction workers and feeding that information to blacklisters potentially has major implications for blacklisting legal cases.<\/p>\n
