Unite has ridiculed the \u00e2\u20ac\u015blimp excuses\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 offered by a Tory MP for failing to engage with a task force set up in his constituency to safeguard local manufacturing jobs.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The South Suffolk task force, set up in response to the announcement last August that Delphi Diesel Systems will close its Sudbury plant by 2020<\/a> with the loss of 500 jobs, is chaired by Tory MP James Cartlidge.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Cartlidge said it has been \u00e2\u20ac\u015bvery difficult\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 to arrange meetings after Unite said it was \u00e2\u20ac\u015bunclear\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 what the task force had done during the last six months to secure the future of the manufacturing base and the jobs of the skilled workforce.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The union made the criticisms<\/a> after it was revealed that task force members \u00e2\u20ac\u201c made of representatives from the county council, Babergh district council and local business support agencies \u00e2\u20ac\u201c had failed to consult Delphi\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s staff, despite having been on site to talk to the management.<\/p>\n

Unite has also commissioned a report by the Syndex consultancy, which concluded that the Sudbury plant holds a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bunique\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 position within the UK economy and has viable future even after Delphi departs the site.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The union discussed the report with Department of International Trade officials during a meeting last week, however Unite regional manager Neal Evans said dialogue with the South Suffolk task force has not been forthcoming.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Very worrying\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Evans added, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe apparent lack of a coherent blueprint from the task force is very worrying.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Responding to Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s criticisms, Cartlidge told the East Anglian Daily Times<\/em><\/a>, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIn terms of action, we have been taking evidence. Our next meeting is planned for early May.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe had hoped to meet before that but it has been very difficult to arrange a date with all parties.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Unite assistant general secretary Tony Burke said in reality Cartlidge is \u00e2\u20ac\u015bjust not interested\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite is leading the way in trying to develop something in an area that is deprived of high quality manufacturing jobs. We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve got ideas and plans, yet the chair of the task force set up by the government admits they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve not been able to organise a meeting,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Burke said.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bHe says they haven\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t consulted with the workforce because it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s been difficult to arrange a date. That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s probably the limpest excuse I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve ever heard from a Tory MP. He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s just not interested.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Evans added that if the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u015bmuch-vaunted\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 industrial strategy<\/a> means anything, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bit should be safeguarding a world-class site, such as that at Sudbury\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
