{"id":14928,"date":"2018-04-04T16:22:32","date_gmt":"2018-04-04T15:22:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=14928"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:59:04","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:59:04","slug":"unite-reps-gkn-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=14928","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Not going down without a fight&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Even in the face of last week\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s defeat as Melrose\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s takeover of GKN was approved by shareholders, Unite GKN members aren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t giving up.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Last Thursday (March 29) <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/gkn-melrose-takeover-approved-unite\/\">investors approved the takeover<\/a> by the slimmest of margins\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c just 50.1 per cent of GKN investors had to vote in favour of the deal for it to go through, and in the end investors owning 52.4 per cent of GKN shares approved the takeover.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite deputy convenor Tim Richards, who works at the GKN Filton site in Bristol, expressed disappointment at the news when he and his colleagues first learned of shareholders\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 decision.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe were shocked really that the takeover went through,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he told UNITElive. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s really no other way to describe it. And we were shocked that Melrose was allowed to know what was going on throughout the whole process while GKN weren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t allowed to know.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Richards explained that on the Thursday morning before the shareholder vote deadline at noon, Melrose reportedly knew they were losing the vote and were allowed to contact shareholders to put pressure on them to sell their shares so the vote would swing in Melrose\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s favour.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe way the whole process was handled was inherently unfair,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Richards said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Uncertainty<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now GKN workers face worrying uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe big worries now are job security and questions of whether the work will stay in this country. There are other issues such as the free shares which were guaranteed to us due to a change in the pension scheme and which should have been given last week \u00e2\u20ac\u201c on the day, oddly enough of the takeover \u00e2\u20ac\u201c that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s all up in the air too.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>GKN reps from across the country met today (April 4) to discuss the union\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s next steps. Unite has still not ruled out a possible government intervention on the grounds of national security.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-04-01\/melrose-s-success-in-gkn-takeover-may-lie-with-u-k-defense-boss\">As Bloomberg highlighted on Sunday<\/a> (April 1), the decision is still very much in the hands of business secretary Greg Clark, who will seek advice from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and other security agencies to determine if the takeover poses a security threat.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After the takeover vote, Clark noted the government has a &#8220;statutory responsibility to consider whether the merger in its proposed final form gives rise to public interest concerns in the areas of media plurality, financial stability and national security.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This assessment will be made by the appropriate authorities and the conclusion set out in due course.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Plan B<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Richards told UNITElive that the next step GKN reps have planned after today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s meeting is to meet with the business secretary again to press their case and pile on the pressure for a government intervention. But, he added, they also have a plan B.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAt the end of the day if government can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t, or more accurately if it <em>won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t<\/em> step in \u00e2\u20ac\u201c it took Clark 54 days to <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/melrose-inadequate-assurances-gkn-slammed\/\">very weakly intervene in the last minute<\/a> after all \u00e2\u20ac\u201c going forward we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re going to have to talk to Melrose and see what their thoughts are on the future.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And while Unite and GKN reps are more than willing to talk constructively with Melrose, it is the firm\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s business model that worries Richards most.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bNo matter what age you are \u00e2\u20ac\u201c young or old; obviously I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m old \u00e2\u20ac\u201c I still worry about the future,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bI still have friends at GKN who are in their 30s; there are apprentices there who have worked under me. I want them to still be there in 20 years\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bMelrose just thinks five years ahead \u00e2\u20ac\u201c that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s it,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he noted. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bTheir motto is \u00e2\u20ac\u0098to improve and sell\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.
