{"id":14949,"date":"2018-04-10T11:38:56","date_gmt":"2018-04-10T10:38:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=14949"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:59:04","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:59:04","slug":"water-firm-pensions-probe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=14949","title":{"rendered":"Water firm pensions probe"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Serious concerns have been expressed over why two highly profitable water companies \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Anglian Water and United Utilities \u00e2\u20ac\u201c are proposing to close their defined benefit (DB) pension schemes, thereby greatly eroding their employees\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 retirement incomes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite is angry that the huge profits made by these two companies are heavily skewed toward the shareholders \u00e2\u20ac\u201c with not enough investment going into the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s water infrastructure and also to maintaining the pension schemes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The chair of the Commons Work and Pensions select committee Frank Field has written to the chief executive of the water regulator, Ofwat, Rachel Fletcher asking for her organisation\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s views on the closure of these two schemes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In his letter Mr Field said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWater and sewerage companies are natural monopolies which are subject to no competition. They hold a privileged position as long-term licence-holders enjoying large and predictable cash flows from a captive consumer base.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere appears to be no effective restraint on these firms&#8217; policy of distributing massive sums to shareholders while cutting the pension benefits that their employees are counting on for their retirement.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He pointed out that the last five annual reports from Anglian Water showed after tax profits of \u00c2\u01411.6bn, of which \u00c2\u01410.8bn was paid out in shareholder dividends. United Utilities made \u00c2\u01411.6bn in after tax profits during the same period, with \u00c2\u01411.2bn going in the pockets of shareholders.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The MP for Birkenhead asked, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWhat requirements can Ofwat place on the companies it regulates in respect of their allocation of company resources to a) shareholder dividends; b) executive remuneration and c) pension scheme funding?\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A thousand Unite members employed by United Utilities in the north west of England have recently taken industrial action in a pensions\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 dispute which could see them thousands of pounds worse off in retirement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>They were protesting at the closure of their final salary pension scheme on April 1, 2018 which is being replaced by a hybrid scheme.
