{"id":15134,"date":"2018-05-01T16:43:37","date_gmt":"2018-05-01T15:43:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=15134"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:58:46","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:58:46","slug":"15134-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=15134","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Not the answer&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>The Donald Trump administration today (May 1) announced that it would be extending\u00c2\u00a0its exemption on steel and aluminium tariffs for the EU, Mexico and Canada.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In March, Trump announced that the <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/trump-steel-tariffs-slammed\/\">US would slapping 25 per cent tariffs on all steel imports<\/a> as well as 10 per cent tariffs on aluminium imports. The government then extended an exemption to its key allies, with a deadline of May 1 to lift the exemptions. Now, the deadline is being extended again.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It provides a brief reprieve for these countries, whose steel and aluminum industries, alongside their governments and trade unions, now have time to make the case for a permanent exemption.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But Unite\u00c2\u00a0national officer for steel Tony Brady warned that there &#8220;must be a global solution that deals with countries responsible for overcapacity and the dumping of cheap steel and aluminum.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Trump is playing misguided games and it is clear the prime minister Theresa May and international trade secretary Liam Fox now count for little in Washington,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A thirty-day respite from punitive tariffs, whilst welcome, is not the answer.UK steelworkers and steel producers are not the villains.
