{"id":15198,"date":"2018-05-11T15:50:42","date_gmt":"2018-05-11T14:50:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=15198"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:58:45","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:58:45","slug":"unite-labour-shipbuilding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=15198","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Gross betrayal&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite, the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s largest union representing defence and shipbuilding workers, backed today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s (May 11) demand by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn for the three new Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessels to be built in UK shipyards.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Government plans to put the \u00c2\u01411bn contract for building the ships out to tender in international shipyards would be an \u00e2\u20ac\u0098act of gross betrayal\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 warned Unite and rob Britain\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s shipbuilding and manufacturing communities of decent jobs for generations to come.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Backing Jeremy Corbyn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s call made in a speech in Govan, Glasgow today Unite assistant general secretary Steve Turner highlighted that by\u00c2\u00a02020, nearly 25 pence in every pound of defence spending will be sustaining jobs in factories overseas, rather than jobs, skills and communities here in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAwarding the \u00c2\u01411 billion contract for the design, engineering and manufacturing of the navy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s three new Royal Fleet Auxiliary ships to an overseas shipyard would be a gross betrayal of the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s world class shipbuilders,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It would deny our steel and other manufacturing supply industries, which should be at the heart of this \u00e2\u20ac\u0098best of British\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 project, of much needed work.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bNot only would it rob our manufacturing and shipbuilding communities of secure decent jobs for generations to come, it would deprive the treasury of tax revenues from businesses and workers alike.
