{"id":15317,"date":"2018-06-01T15:39:22","date_gmt":"2018-06-01T14:39:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=15317"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:58:43","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:58:43","slug":"john-mcdonnell-tgi-fridays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=15317","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;100 per cent support&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>TGI Fridays Manchester staff met with shadow chancellor John McDonnell today (June 1), during their third 24-hour strike over a new tipping policy that will see workers lose up to \u00c2\u0141250 a month.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"unitelive.org\/tag\/tgi-fridays\">TGI Fridays<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0employees at four branches \u00e2\u20ac\u201c in Manchester, Milton Keynes and London \u00e2\u20ac\u201c are striking over a new policy that will see waiting staff on the minimum wage lose 40 per cent of their tips in order to top up the pay of kitchen staff.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While waiting staff are supportive of their colleagues receiving a pay rise, they are angry that the profitable firm is attempting to use their tips to do so.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>McDonnell met with TGI Fridays workers in Manchester to offer his support.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bSolidarity with TGI Fridays workers on strike against waiting staff tips being used to top up the wages of kitchen staff.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis move sees the wages of already poorly paid waiting staff falling by up to \u00c2\u0141250 a month.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015b<a href=\"unitelive.org\/tag\/labour\">Labour<\/a> stands for fair pay and respect in the workplace. TGI Fridays workers from The Trafford Centre in Manchester, and those across the country, have my 100 per cent support in their fight.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8216;Really positive&#8217;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Unite regional officer Andrena Clarke said members had been heartened by McDonnell\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s support and said the meeting with the shadow chancellor had been \u00e2\u20ac\u015breally positive\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe staff are young people and are very enthusiastic about fighting for their rights. Meeting John McDonnell today was a massive boost for them. He said he is fully supportive of us and said he is going to write to the company and help build up as much support as possible.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThey were already on a high about taking the campaign forward but they said this has really provided that extra impetus to get more people involved.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Clarke said the Manchester protest, which was held at the Trafford Centre, also elicited a lot of support from members of the public.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Public distaste at the firm\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s behaviour is also reflected in a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/news\/2018\/05\/23\/tgi-fridays-brand-perception-declines-after-employ\/\">YouGov poll<\/a> that showed its brand impression score (whether someone has a positive impression of a brand) has taken a hit since February, when reports of the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s decision first hit the headlines.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite regional officer Dave Turnbull said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bTGI Fridays and restaurant chains like it are risking their brands\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 reputation if they don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t get their houses in order and start paying staff a wage they can live on and treating them with respect.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWith the chain\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s owner, Electra, putting itself up for sale, the time has come for common sense to prevail.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the strike, a TGI waitress of 15 years, said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bTips are a gesture of good will from our guests to thank us for our service . This is not something that should be taken from us when we are living on minimum wage and have families to support.
