Capita has been handed a contract for military fire and rescue services by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) despite a financial health assessment giving the highest level of risk to the outsourcing firm.<\/p>\n

Unite said that by disregarding its own risk analysis the government has shown it has learnt nothing from the devastating collapse of outsourcing giant Carillion<\/a> in January and demanded an urgent investigation into the awarding of the Capita contract.<\/p>\n

Capita was given 10 out of 10 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c with one indicating the least amount of risk and 10 the most \u00e2\u20ac\u201c for a financial risk assessment undertaken on behalf of the MoD by financial consultancy Company Watch.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Financial Times<\/em> revealed<\/a> the assessment was updated on June 7, while Capita<\/a> confirmed on Tuesday (June 18) that it had won the contract to run around 70 military fire stations around the world.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Between 1,500 to 2,000 MoD workers will be affected by the decision to privatise the services, with Capita expected to rake in around \u00c2\u0141500m over 10 years from the move.<\/p>\n

The firm has been forced to borrow more than \u00c2\u0141700 million after racking up losses of \u00c2\u0141513 million last year.<\/p>\n

The risk assessment also awarded Capital a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bhealth score\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 of just three out of 100. A score of 25 or less puts a firm in a red \u00e2\u20ac\u015bwarning area\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 for financial vulnerability.<\/p>\n

Capita beat fellow outsourcing giant Serco<\/a> for the contract, with the MoD saying Capita\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s bid offered the best value for money.<\/p>\n

An MoD spokesperson said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bAll our suppliers are subject to robust assessments ahead of any contract placement and closely monitored throughout.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Unite national officer for the MoD<\/a> Jim Kennedy said the decision to award Capita the contract was \u00e2\u20ac\u015bscandalous\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt is absolutely scandalous that even though the MoD\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s own financial check found that awarding a contract to Capita was extremely risky, ministers thought it appropriate to award this contract.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe government has clearly learnt nothing from the Carillion fiasco. There needs to be an urgent investigation into how and why this contract was let to Capita.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n
