{"id":15506,"date":"2018-07-03T17:46:48","date_gmt":"2018-07-03T16:46:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=15506"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:58:39","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:58:39","slug":"back-uk-manufacturing-jobs-call","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=15506","title":{"rendered":"Back UK manufacturing jobs call"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>A number of calls to ensure the future of UK manufacturing were made yesterday (July 2) by Unite policy conference delegates at the Manufacturing Matters fringe.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mick Joyce from Cone Lifts in Gateshead said the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Industrial Strategy needs to be bolstered by a minister for manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Joyce said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bI believe a minister for manufacturing is key to building the sector in the UK. We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve never had a minister for manufacturing and it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a huge industry and key to the UK economy. Without a minister it is treating the sector, its members and its members\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 families with contempt. The sooner we get one the better.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Skills gap <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Peter Russell, who works in the motor components sector, spoke about the need to close the skills gap.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe should be attracting the younger generation with proper gold standard apprenticeships. We need to build up our skills, because right at the moment there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a severe shortage,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Russell.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe can see with the rise of digital and automated technologies how quickly things are changing. The same goes for manufacturing vehicles for local authorities.
