{"id":15647,"date":"2018-07-09T15:37:13","date_gmt":"2018-07-09T14:37:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=15647"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:58:37","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:58:37","slug":"uks-national-grid-locks-out-us-based-workers-in-pension-and-healthcare-row","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=15647","title":{"rendered":"National Grid-lock"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite has sent a message of solidarity to 1,200 United Steelworkers (USW) members who have been locked out of their jobs in Massachusetts by an US-based division of the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s National Grid.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>During last week\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Unite <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/winning-for-members\/\">policy conference<\/a>, delegates unanimously voted in favour of an emergency motion condemning National Grid\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s attempt to strong-arm USW gas workers, who are in dispute with the firm over its attempts to slash pension and healthcare coverage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite national officer for <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/tag\/energy\/\">energy<\/a> Peter McIntosh noted that National Grid is a common employer of USW and Unite members.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite fully supports the USW members in their efforts to obtain a fair contract with National Grid, a UK-based utility company.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe recognise that the skill and experience they bring to the job is crucial in providing essential public services. USW members are on the front lines in responding to emergency calls, repairing gas leaks and maintaining vital infrastructure<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s time for National Grid to bargain in good faith and recognise the value that USW members bring to the job each and every day. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s imperative that the health and safety of National Grid employees and the general public not be compromised.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015b<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usw.org\/\">USW<\/a> members should be allowed to work whilst discussions take place with the company.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The utility workers were locked out of their jobs by National Grid on June 25 following a breakdown in the negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The emergency motion stated, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite calls on National Grid to immediately end the lockout and return the highly-skilled USW members to their jobs while negotiations for a fair contract continue.
