{"id":15801,"date":"2018-07-26T08:00:19","date_gmt":"2018-07-26T07:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=15801"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:58:35","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:58:35","slug":"child-poverty-rising","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=15801","title":{"rendered":"Poverty rising"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Falling incomes, austerity and Brexit have caused the biggest rise in UK poverty since the Thatcher years, according to new analysis from the Resolution Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The think tank\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.resolutionfoundation.org\/publications\/the-living-standards-audit-2018\/\">Living Standards Audit<\/a> found that real incomes for the poorest third of households fell by between \u00c2\u014150 and \u00c2\u0141150 last year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Brexit-related inflation increased by more than 3 per cent in 2017\/18, even as the Tories inflicted further cuts to benefits and tax credits.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The research found that the combination of all these factors led to the official poverty rate jumping from 22.1 per cent to 23.2 last year \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the biggest rise since 1988.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"unitelive.org\/tag\/poverty\">poverty<\/a> rate is made up of households living on less than 60 per cent of the median national income after housing costs are accounted for.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Child poverty<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Shockingly, the Resolution Foundation found that the child poverty rate had jumped even higher \u00e2\u20ac\u201c from 30.3 per cent to 33.4 per cent \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and was rising at double the rate indicated by official data.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The report stated, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWith the middle pulling away from the bottom, child poverty is projected to have increased last year by around three per cent.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis was driven by benefit cuts that particularly hit low-income families, including the three per cent real-terms fall in the value of tax credits and child benefit.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A Resolution Foundation spokesman described 2017\/18 as a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bstrikingly bad year for lower income households\u00e2\u20ac\u0165, explaining that the \u00e2\u20ac\u015b2015 package of <a href=\"unitelive.org\/tag\/benefits\">benefit<\/a> cuts began in earnest, in combination with higher inflation\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite assistant general secretary Steve Turner said poverty can be tackled if root causes like persistently low pay are attacked through measures such as hiking the minimum wage to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unitetheunion.org\/news\/minimum-wage-increase-would-boost-public-coffers-unite-study-finds\/\">\u00c2\u014110 per hour<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Turner added, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bOther measures such as properly funding social care;
