Unite has described the decision by the official receiver to make redundant 341 Carillion apprentices as an act of \u00e2\u20ac\u0098crass stupidity\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The decision to make the apprentices redundant was made just as Parliament went into recess last week, preventing MPs from raising concerns at the decision.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When Carillion collapsed in January it employed 1,200 apprentices and following the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s demise, the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) has found suitable placements for over 800 of the affected apprentices.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The decision to make redundant the remaining apprentices is a further blow to the construction industry which is in the depths of a deep seated skills crisis. In 2016\/17 there were just 21,010 people on construction apprentice courses; the decision to make the remaining Carillion apprentices redundant reduced the entire UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s apprenticeship numbers by 1.6 per cent.<\/p>\n

The axing of the apprentices once again demonstrates the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s failure to deal with the collapse of Carillion. As the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s biggest construction client the government could have used its procurement power to ensure that all of Carillion\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s apprentices were found suitable new placements.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is an appalling way to treat these apprentices who should have become the backbone of the industry. To dump them and to destroy their training is an act of crass stupidity,” said Unite assistant general secretary Gail Cartmail.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThese actions highlight the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s total failure to assist the workers who have been most affected by Carillion\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s collapse through no fault of their own.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe government could have used its procurement power to find placements for these apprentices but it chose not to, demonstrating that it is not serious about dealing with the skills crisis facing the industry,” she added.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe dismissal of Carillion\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s remaining apprentices once again demonstrates that the construction skills crisis will not be tackled until procurement rules are introduced which require that all companies undertaking public sector contracts must train apprentices.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Last month, Unite lambasted the government’s handling of the Carillion collapse as thousands of workers still find themselves in limbo and vital public sector construction projects remain stalled.\u00c2\u00a0 The criticism came as a report\u00c2\u00a0by the National Audit Office (NAO) published\u00c2\u00a0in June revealed that the taxpayer is expected to have to pay a minimum of \u00c2\u0141148m to clean up the mess caused by Carillion\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s collapse.<\/a><\/p>\n

The NAO report follows a final report in May from the Work and Pensions and BEIS committees, in which MPs\u00c2\u00a0called on the government to implement<\/a> an \u00e2\u20ac\u015bambitious and wide-ranging set of reforms\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 to reset corporate accountability, warning that \u00e2\u20ac\u015bCarillion could happen again, and soon\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
