Vile right-wing thugs attacked a socialist and trade union bookshop in central London on Saturday (August 4), prompting an outpouring of solidarity for the bookseller and its staff.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Around a dozen masked fascists barged into Bookmarks<\/a>, in Bloomsbury, in an attempt to \u00e2\u20ac\u015bintimidate staff and customers\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 shortly before the shop closed.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The mob were caught on video<\/a> damaging books and displays as they verbally abused staff, who remained calm and collected throughout the episode.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A post on Bookmarks\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Facebook page stated, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bOn Saturday evening around 6:45 just as we were closing, Bookmarks was attacked by around a dozen mask-wearing fascists.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“They attempted to intimidate staff and customers and to destroy books and materials. Fortunately no one was hurt.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“We will not let this happen! Never Again!”<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The shop\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Twitter account was also defiant, saying: \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is the true face of fascism. No Pasaran! (They shall not pass).\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Following the attack the shop, which is a bookseller for the TUC<\/a>, and its staff received hundreds of messages of solidarity.<\/p>\n

Unite general secretary Len McCluskey tweeted<\/a>, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bYesterday the far right attacked Bookmarks bookshop. It doesn’t matter it’s a left wing bookshop, it matters that they ripped up books. The Nazis burned books. I stand with the staff and all those who support Bookmarks.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s mixed fleet branch also expressed solidarity and condemned the attack as \u00e2\u20ac\u015bcowardly\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

In a tweet<\/a>, the mixed fleet branch provided a link to a list of publications on fighting fascism stocked by Bookmarks and said the incident was \u00e2\u20ac\u015ba timely reminder to educate ourselves on these thugs\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The attack on Bookmarks comes after a Unite bus driver received widespread praise<\/a> for her bravery in the face of racist abuse from another fascist mob, which blocked her vehicle in July as it made its way through Trafalgar Square.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Both the Bookmarks incident and the stoppage of the bus were instigated by extremists who had travelled to central London in support of far-right figureheads.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The individuals involved in the Bookmarks attack were seen<\/a> at a rally earlier on Saturday against Facebook\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s banning of right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and his Infowars website for hate speech.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Those responsible for blocking the bus were part of a Football Lads Alliance<\/a> demonstration against the jailing of English Defence League (EDL) founder Tommy Robinson for contempt of court.<\/p>\n
