{"id":15947,"date":"2018-08-15T15:13:22","date_gmt":"2018-08-15T14:13:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=15947"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:58:18","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:58:18","slug":"chief-executive-fat-cat-pay-wage-squeeze","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=15947","title":{"rendered":"Fat cat bosses raking it in"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s no end in sight for UK workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 wage pain \u00e2\u20ac\u201c <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/business\/news\/wages-latest-jobs-unemployment-4-office-for-national-statistics-bank-of-england-interest-rates-a8490681.html\">wage growth slowed yet again in June<\/a> according to yesterday\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s latest labour market figures \u00e2\u20ac\u201c but for top chief executives, who have seen their pay soar by 11 per cent, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s an altogether different story.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>FTSE 100 top bosses saw their median earnings rise to nearly \u00c2\u01414m in 2017, up from \u00c2\u01413.53 million the year before, while UK workers received a mere 2 per cent pay boost over the same time period, <a href=\"http:\/\/highpaycentre.org\/files\/CEO_pay_report.pdf\">according to research from the High Pay Centre<\/a> and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>UK workers on a mean full-time salary of \u00c2\u014129,000 would have to work nearly 200 years to earn the same as the average FTSE 100 CEO.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Shareholder revolt<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The 11 per cent pay rise figure for the FTSE 100 chief executives excluded outliers at the very top \u00e2\u20ac\u201c among these was Persimmon CEO Jeff Fairburn, who took home an eye-watering \u00c2\u014147.1m in 2017, 22 times more than he did in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Another outlier, CEO Simon Peckham, at the helm Melrose, which took over GKN in a controversial hostile takeover earlier this year, received \u00c2\u014142.8m in 2017, 43 times what he earned in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/melrose-chiefs-slammed-earnings\/\">At the time of the takeover<\/a>, High Pay Centre director Luke Hildyard said Peckham\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s pay constituted \u00e2\u20ac\u015bextraordinary sums of money, 10 times higher than the average for a FTSE-100 chief executive, let alone an ordinary worker.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bMelrose are involved in a highly controversial takeover, supported by hedge funds and opposed by workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 representatives,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he pointed out.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Many investors have sided with workers in a public outcry over runaway executive pay \u00e2\u20ac\u201c at Persimmon\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s AGM in April, nearly half voted to reject its CEO\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s pay, while a quarter of shareholders failed to support Melrose boss Peckham\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s pay.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Labour MP and chair of the business, energy and industrial strategy committee Rachel Reeves said in response to today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s High Pay Centre report that \u00e2\u20ac\u015bexcessive executive pay undermines public trust in business.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When CEOs are happily banking ever larger bonuses while average worker pay is squeezed, then something is going very wrong,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she noted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Recent revolts on pay awards show that shareholders are increasingly sharing this frustration at unjustifiable pay awards. Executive pay must match performance.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If Boards and Remuneration Committee chairs are so out of touch they are prepared to waive through off-the-scale reward packages, then shareholders must strike back and hold them to account. If businesses don&#8217;t step up on executive pay, then government will need to step in.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Government action call<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>So far, however, the government has failed to take action despite promises. In 2016, prime minister Theresa May pledged to introduce greater regulation on executive pay, including putting employees on company boards and having binding votes on pay.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But in the end <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/watered-down\/\">these pledges were quietly dropped <\/a>and replaced with watered down measures, such as requiring companies with over 250 employees to publish the pay gap between the chief executive and the average worker\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 salary from 2019. The government has also proposed a \u00e2\u20ac\u0098name and shame\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 list of companies whose shareholders vote in the majority against executive pay packages.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite has criticised these measures as ineffective \u00e2\u20ac\u201c\u00c2\u00a0 this information is, after all, already in the public domain.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite general secretary Len McCluskey said that today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s figures from the High Pay Centre \u00e2\u20ac\u015bshow that it is business as usual in Britain\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s boardrooms.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt is ten years since the casino bankers crashed the economy but nothing has changed. Excess in the City is alive and well,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he noted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bFat cat bonuses like these are a reminder that there is something very wrong with our economy. They may be popping the corks in the City but across the country working people are struggling.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWages have endured a historic slump and are simply not keeping pace with the rising cost of living,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 McCluskey added. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bInterest rate rises will hurt many in a country with the highest personal debt in Europe. And to the shame of the sixth richest country on the planet, foodbanks are running out of supplies and children are going hungry during the summer holiday.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOnly an out of touch prime minister and an uncaring government would try to claim that our economy is thriving.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>McCluskey called on Theresa May to \u00e2\u20ac\u015bget a grip\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe fat cats are taking all the cream while Britain&#8217;s workers work harder and earn less. We need tough action to rein in fat cat pay and a strengthening of trade union rights to organise and bargain for better wages on behalf of workers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIf Britain\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s boardrooms want workers to help make them profits, it is high time they paid them fairly and started acting responsibly.
