The Tories\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 new social housing plans have been branded \u00e2\u20ac\u015bpitiful\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 because they contain no new investment to build desperately needed homes.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Housing secretary James Brokenshire said the proposals<\/a> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c which include plans to streamline the complaints process and publish landlord \u00e2\u20ac\u015bleague tables\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c will help \u00e2\u20ac\u015bimprove fairness, quality and safety for residents living in social housing across the country\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

But Labour derided the plans as \u00e2\u20ac\u015bpitiful\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 for failing to commit \u00e2\u20ac\u015ba single extra penny\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 to housing construction, while Unite said only a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bmassive council house building programme\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 will end the Tories\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 self-inflicted housing<\/a> crisis.<\/p>\n

It comes after Brokenshire was left with egg on his face after admitting<\/a> that the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s new \u00c2\u0141100m scheme to end homelessness within 10 years contains no fresh funding.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Meanwhile housing minister Kit Malthouse conceded<\/a> that the construction of affordable homes would stay at a record low throughout 2019.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Only 5,900 social housing units were built last year \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the lowest amount since records began.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

During the same period 1.15m households in England were on waiting lists for social housing but only 290,000 homes were made available, official figures<\/a> obtained by the housing charity Shelter show.<\/p>\n

Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s shadow housing secretary John Healey said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bNothing in this social housing green paper measures up to the scale of the crisis.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt’s pitiful that while Conservative cuts have driven the number of new social rented homes to a record low, there is not a single penny of new money to increase supply.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unite assistant general secretary Steve Turner said the system needs to be rebalanced through investment in council house building programmes to create homes and decent work, as well as by introducing rent controls and regulations on private landlords.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe must embark on a massive council home building programme \u00e2\u20ac\u201d we need at least 250,000 homes built each and every year to keep up with demand.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bA housebuilding programme itself confers economic benefits beyond helping drive down housing costs \u00e2\u20ac\u201c our research has shown that for every \u00c2\u01411 spent on housing construction, an extra \u00c2\u01412.09 is generated in the economy. Each \u00c2\u01411 also generates a 56p return to the Exchequer.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Turner added that only a Labour government would be able to deliver such reform.<\/p>\n

He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bLabour not only offers bold proposals but the party has backed it up with a detailed plan<\/a> to deliver on these proposals\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 Labour is the only party that can effectively tackle a housing crisis that gets worse each and every year.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n
