{"id":16000,"date":"2018-08-23T16:36:12","date_gmt":"2018-08-23T15:36:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=16000"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:58:17","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:58:17","slug":"carillion-public-inquiry-dispatches","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=16000","title":{"rendered":"Carillion &#8216;Ponzi scheme&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite called for a public inquiry into the collapse of Carillion and for it to cover the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s approach to the awarding of contracts, following the Dispatches programme shown yesterday (August 22).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The programme included senior business analysts who described Carillion as acting like a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bPonzi Scheme\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 and that it was probably insolvent in 2016 but continued to trade for over a year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dispatches also detailed the so called \u00e2\u20ac\u0098aggressive accounting\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 that took place at Carillion under the former director Richard Adam. Accountants who forecast losses on major projects were told to go back and re-work the numbers to show that the schemes were profitable.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite has raised severe concerns about the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s decision in June to award a 12 year contract to outsource the Ministry of Defence\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s firefighter service to Capita, despite the company scoring 10 out of 10 and recording a financial health score of just three out of 10.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAs information continues to emerge about the collapse of Carillion, the need for a public inquiry grows,&#8221; said Unite assistant general secretary Gail Cartmail.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThousands of workers have lost their jobs and companies in the supply chain have gone to the wall, though no fault of their own and yet no one has been held responsible.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bRather than learn from its huge errors which contributed to Carillion\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s collapse the government is acting as though it is business as normal,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThere is a growing concern that the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s inaction could result in further collapses of outsourcing giants resulting yet again with workers losing their jobs and the taxpayer picking up the tab.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When Carillion went bust it was employing 19,000 people and there were a further 35,000 people employed by it sub-contractors and in its supply chain.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The company went bust with seven billion pounds of liabilities and only \u00c2\u014125m in the bank. The cost of breaking up and closing the company is in excess of \u00c2\u014150m in fees charged by auditors PwC alone.
