{"id":16048,"date":"2018-09-01T09:25:08","date_gmt":"2018-09-01T08:25:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=16048"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:58:16","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:58:16","slug":"six-pound-day-spend-after-bills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=16048","title":{"rendered":"Personal spending squeeze"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Four in ten people have less than \u00c2\u01416.60 per day to spend on themselves after their bills have been paid, a survey by the Nationwide Building Society has found.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the UK people have on average \u00c2\u014113.22 a day for personal spending, according to the survey.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, the amount of money people have left over for discretionary spending once essential bills have been paid differs considerably from region to region.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In London people have an average of \u00c2\u0141585 a month free to spend, compared to \u00c2\u0141372 in Scotland, \u00c2\u0141362 in north-west England, \u00c2\u0141353 in Yorkshire and the Humber and \u00c2\u0141268 in Wales.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Two-thirds of people have cut their spending to pay essential costs, the survey found.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Around a third of respondents (30 per cent) had skipped payments during the last year, with insurance, utility bills and rent most commonly missed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Nationwide also conducted analysis of more than 700m customer transactions to accompany the survey of 2,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The analysis found that 26 per cent of customers regularly spend over their earnings, going into the red by \u00c2\u0141101.84 a month on average, with a total overspend of \u00c2\u01411,222.08 a year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite assistant general secretary Steve Turner said the survey is further proof that the minimum wage needs to increase.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s minimum wage is lagging far too behind a real Living Wage and it needs to catch up quick \u00e2\u20ac\u201c we at Unite support Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s call for a \u00c2\u014110 an hour statutory minimum wage now,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Turner said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWorkers have suffered the longest squeeze in living standards in recorded history in recent years, thanks to the actions of this government and its predecessor.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bAn increase in the minimum wage to \u00c2\u014110 would benefit those on the lowest wages and is one of a number of measures that need to be enacted to prevent the economy and peoples\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 living standards from plummeting.
