The trade union movement must stand united with Grenfell survivors in their fight for a full public inquiry in which those responsible are held to account.<\/p>\n

This was the message of Unite delegate Maxine Loza, first-time speaker, who seconded a composite motion on a Grenfell inquiry at TUC conference on Monday (September 10)<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She mourned the loss of lives, including fellow union members, colleagues and friends.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAn injury to one is the concern of all, and I am proud that Unite has risen to that ideal – providing a helping hand to our members from Grenfell in their time of need,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she said.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThat includes supporting our members as core participants to the Grenfell Inquiry and adding our voice to their demand for an immediate moratorium on the use of combustible materials on high rise blocks,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Maxine went on to say.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She lauded the \u00e2\u20ac\u015bunimaginable\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 courage and \u00e2\u20ac\u015bincalculable\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 bravery of brothers and sisters in the Fire Brigades Union (FBU) who were called to the fire that night.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur solidarity with them is unwavering,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she said as she called for an inquiry into Grenfell that \u00e2\u20ac\u015bmust go further and it must be bolder.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis composite motion demands that the inquiry consider the bigger questions,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she added. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThat it brings scrutiny to the de-regulation of building standards.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThat it draws out the undeniable link between austerity and the deadly short-cuts taken when commissioning the exterior cladding. That it asks why the warnings of tenants and their organisations were ignored until it was too late.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Maxine explained that the failings at Grenfell were not \u00e2\u20ac\u015bunlucky, unintended consequences\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThey were the result of decisions taken — by people in authority; by people prepared for others to shoulder the risk. By people \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and out of respect for the dead I will not mince my words \u00e2\u20ac\u201c by people who are guilty and must be brought from the shadows into the light of justice.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe people of Grenfell must be able to hold to account each and every individual in the chain of responsibility \u00e2\u20ac\u201c from the Minister downwards,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she added as she called on conference to support the composite.<\/p>\n
