{"id":16132,"date":"2018-09-10T17:11:38","date_gmt":"2018-09-10T16:11:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=16132"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:58:15","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:58:15","slug":"brexit-tuc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=16132","title":{"rendered":"Block no-deal Brexit call"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>TUC congress delegates have voted overwhelmingly in favour of a Unite motion to mobilise against a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bcliff edge\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Brexit and for a general election in the event of a deal that does not protect workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 rights and jobs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Moving composite two in the <a href=\"unitebrexitcheck.org\">Brexit<\/a> debate today (September 10), Unite general secretary Len McCluskey accused Theresa May of trying to \u00e2\u20ac\u015bsplit the difference between common sense and economic madness\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>McCluskey said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bShe has been held hostage by a coalition of imperial nostalgics and free market fanatics whose vision is of a British society of the 1950s allied to the economic dogma of the 1850s. This would be all very funny if we were not being marched to the cliff edge, while, like Nero, the cabinet fiddles.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>McCluskey contrasted the need to protect UK jobs and workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 rights with the Tory government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s prioritisation of internal party politics over the national interest.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He told delegates, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur priorities are different, as this composite makes clear. We insist on a Brexit that keeps and indeed builds on those workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 rights that come from the EU. Secures barrier-free trade with Europe, which is the only guarantee of millions of jobs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAnd one that protects both <a href=\"unitelive.org\/tag\/eu\">EU<\/a> citizens here and British citizens living and working in the EU, while securing a customs union with the EU after we leave, as Labour has demanded.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>McCluskey warned that a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bno deal\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Brexit is looming large and that Theresa May\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s proposals for Britain\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s future relationship with the EU is on \u00e2\u20ac\u015blife support\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Slam the brakes\u00c2\u00a0on<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Unite leader said parliament must \u00e2\u20ac\u015bslam the brakes on\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 if the Tories continue to push the country closer to a devastating no deal exit from the EU and force a general election.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He explained, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe vote we will need above all is a general election that can deliver a <a href=\"unitelive.org\/tag\/labour\">Labour<\/a> government which will not only conduct honest and friendly talks with the EU, but will tackle the underlying economic and social problems that led so many to give the establishment a well-deserved kicking two years ago.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>McCluskey added that the option for a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bpeople\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s vote\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 on the final deal must also be left on the table \u00e2\u20ac\u015bif for no other reason than as a safety net if Tory MPs become spineless and don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have the courage of their own convictions to oppose what the Prime Minister brings back\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite assistant general secretary and <a href=\"unitelive.org\/tag\/tuc\">TUC<\/a> executive council spokesperson on Europe Steve Turner also addressed delegates, speaking in favour of the council\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s statement on Brexit, which was carried with an overwhelming majority.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8216;Heal the wounds of Brexit&#8217; <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Turner said the trade union movement is uniquely placed to heal the wounds of Brexit and called on unions to \u00e2\u20ac\u015brise like lions to challenge the threat of a hard-right Tory attack on working people\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 and \u00e2\u20ac\u015bbosses who seek to use Brexit to shed jobs, offshore jobs and put a match to hard won terms and conditions, protections and rights.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bCongress we live in a divided Britain, however we voted &#8211;
