On Tuesday (September 11) Andrew Worth a Unite member and bus driver spoke in support of motion 5 on automation.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bI\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m a bus driver from Plymouth and I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m in absolute support of this motion,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Worth.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bMy Union, Unite, has identified the threat to jobs that automation will bring,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he added.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Organising and Leverage Department have been travelling the country highlighting the impact that automation will have on every Unite sector \u00e2\u20ac\u201c from finance to warehousing and transport to docks.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The next industrial revolution<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bLet me be very clear, automation will affect jobs. This is the next industrial revolution, but the problem this time is that jobs will disappear as opposed to being created,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Worth.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

There is technology currently being utilised by Stagecoach that allows a bus to be automated around the depot, from filling, then through the wash and then into a parking bay.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s only in the depot I hear you say! It’s only not on our roads because there isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t the legislation to allow it on our roads. Yet,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bMy role as a bus driver would in effect be over,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he added.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Drivers wouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have the ultimate control of the vehicle.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bInstead I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d be there as an emergency stop button pusher. Do you think my company would pay me the same rate of pay, of course not,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Worth.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He warned that automation must not be something that simply happens to us.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Take control<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe must use our collective bargaining power to take control of new technology in the workplace,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe cannot un-invent new technology. But we can determine how it is introduced. And who stands to benefit,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he added.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Worth went on to say that automation is coming faster than people realise.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe have to act now and win New Technology Agreements to make sure that unions and workers are prepared,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThat means working together through the TUC to organise and prepare as much as possible, up-skilling employees and looking at alternatives is must,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he added.<\/p>\n
