{"id":16167,"date":"2018-09-12T10:36:15","date_gmt":"2018-09-12T09:36:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=16167"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:58:15","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:58:15","slug":"pasty-turner-steel-tuc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=16167","title":{"rendered":"Steel solidarity"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite delegate and steel worker Mark \u00e2\u20ac\u0098Pasty\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Turner spoke in support of a motion on Tuesday (September 11) on steel as he highlighted the latest threats to the industry since Unite&#8217;s initial Save our Steel campaign in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe Save our Steel campaign \u00e2\u20ac\u201c representing unity between trade unions in the steel industry and strengthened by the solidarity of our movement \u00e2\u20ac\u201c brought steel back from the brink,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Pasty said, but warned that the industry \u00e2\u20ac\u015bfaces a new threat.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt&#8217;s loud. It&#8217;s orange. It&#8217;s mostly found on Twitter. But comically absurd as he is \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the trade war Donald Trump is hell-bent on launching threatens to take the recovering steel industry back to the worst days of 2015,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Pasty noted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He pointed out to conference that notwithstanding Trump\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s tweets, the \u00e2\u20ac\u015btrue issue facing steel is the same as it was in 2015 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c global overcapacity.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bCheap steel continues to be dumped on the market by with cheap steel being dumped on the market by China, Turkey, Russian and at least ten other countries.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe answer is not to lurch between Trump-style protectionism or unrestricted \u00e2\u20ac\u0098free\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 trade\u00c2\u00a0which we could have under this Tory government, especially if we have a Brexit no deal that could threaten not just steel but our whole manufacturing base in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Pasty called on conference to \u00e2\u20ac\u015bfind a new solution,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 one that he said must be \u00e2\u20ac\u015bbased on solidarity; on re-writing the rules of international trade to benefit workers in all countries.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bTrade is not a no-holds-barred, sum total game. It must be about mutual benefit,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he went on to say.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He explained how Unite is working closely with American and Canadian trade unionists of the United Steelworkers through the global union Workers Uniting. Unite is likewise working with European metal unions through IndustriALL.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe are making sure that our internationalism is strong enough to weather whatever Trump and his type plus Brexit can throw at us,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Past told conference that the industry will keep facing new threats if we cannot answer simple questions such as \u00e2\u20ac\u0098Do we understand the value of having a steel industry?\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 or \u00e2\u20ac\u0098Do we understand what it means for communities \u00e2\u20ac\u201c from Wales to Scotland?\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 or even \u00e2\u20ac\u0098Do we understand what it means for the future of UK manufacturing?\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIf we do \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and conference I believe we all do,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bthen we must campaign now to place the industry right in the heart of a radical, economic programme for change.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe must see a proper sector deal that tackles the long term issues of the industry, whilst also being part of a proper manufacturing strategy for the UK. We should see a procurement strategy which means major projects like the new naval frigates are not only built in Britain \u00e2\u20ac\u201c but are built using steel from Britain,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Pasty likewise called for strong trade defences put in place to shield jobs from \u00e2\u20ac\u015bthe destructive America First agenda of Donald Trump and the economic vandalism of Chinese dumping.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bConference, I call on you to stand with steel workers,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Pasty concluded to applause. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bStand with us now, as you have stood with us since the crisis of 2015.
