The governor of the Bank of England issued a stark warning over Brexit to cabinet ministers\u00c2\u00a0on Friday \u00c2\u00a0(September 13), telling them that a no deal exit could be as economically crippling as the 2008 financial crash.<\/p>\n

Unite said the government must heed Carney\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s warning \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and those of firms such as Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and change its disastrous approach to the EU negotiations before it plunges the country over an economic cliff edge.<\/p>\n

During an emergency cabinet meeting to discuss preparations for a no deal scenario, Bank of England governor Mark Carney told Theresa May and her ministers that crashing out of the EU could result in an meltdown comparable to that of a decade ago.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Cabinet sources told the Guardian<\/em><\/a> that Carney said the unemployment rate could reach double digits, rail and air links with the continent could be disrupted and house prices could plummet by 25-35 per cent.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

‘Dire consequences’<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n

Unite assistant general secretary Steve Turner said the government has received warning after warning about the dire consequences of a no deal Brexit.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bBut like Wile E. Coyote they continue following their red lines towards the cliff edge. Except the consequences of a Tory Brexit will be real and won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be felt by the rich and powerful whose delusions are driving the country down this dangerous path. Instead they will be shouldered by those least able to bear them: ordinary working families,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Turner said.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bMay must heed Mark Carney\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s warning that a hard Brexit could be as bad as the 2008 crash and change course towards to deal that secures a customs union and barrier-free trade with the EU. If she can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t negotiate a deal that doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t spell disaster for our industries and communities, then the government must be dissolved and a general election called.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Carney\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s intervention came just two days after JLR \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Britain\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s biggest car maker, which supports a quarter of million jobs directly and indirectly \u00e2\u20ac\u201c said a no deal Brexit could cost the firm \u00c2\u01411.2bn a year<\/a> and cause job losses.<\/p>\n

JLR boss Ralf Speth said the idea of a cliff edge Brexit was \u00e2\u20ac\u015bhorrifying\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

Unite general secretary Len McCluskey called on the Prime Minister to listen to Speth, saying \u00e2\u20ac\u015bworkers’ jobs are on the line here. Get a Brexit deal with frictionless trade and protect our auto industry. Stop playing Russian roulette with people’s jobs\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

Brexit secretary Dominic Raab acknowledged the \u00e2\u20ac\u015bharmful<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 consequences of no deal Brexit for JLR and other UK car manufacturers, but in keeping with the Tories\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 bull headed negotiation strategy insisted the ramifications would be worse for the EU.<\/p>\n

Raab then went on to declare in the Telegraph<\/em><\/a> yesterday that the EU will not receive the \u00c2\u014139bn divorce bill agreed with the UK government if a deal is not reached.<\/p>\n

Responding to Raab\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s comments, Unite assistant general secretary Tony Burke said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bRaab is once again sabre rattling rather than negotiating by threatening not to pay money we have agreed to pay to EU. Result will be humiliation for UK.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n
