{"id":16253,"date":"2018-09-20T16:32:07","date_gmt":"2018-09-20T15:32:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=16253"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:58:13","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:58:13","slug":"brexit-regulations-bonfire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=16253","title":{"rendered":"Regulations bonfire"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Tory Brexiteers and a number of right-wing US organisations \u00e2\u20ac\u201c both with access to the upper echelons of their governments \u00e2\u20ac\u201c have teamed up to produce a UK\/US trade deal blueprint that proposes a regulations bonfire and the opening up of the NHS to foreign competition.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite said the plans \u00e2\u20ac\u201c released amidst a push by Conservative hardliners to achieve a hard exit from the EU \u00e2\u20ac\u201c were \u00e2\u20ac\u015bterrifying\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 and demonstrated the dangers of allowing a Tory Brexit to succeed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cato.org\/publications\/white-paper\/ideal-us-uk-free-trade-agreement-free-traders-perspective\">blueprint<\/a>, jointly produced by the Initiative for Free Trade (IFT) and the Cato Institute, calls for environmental and consumer regulations to scrapped, freedom of movement between the UK and US and for foreign companies to be allowed to bid for NHS services.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>IFT is a think tank founded by arch-Brexiteer and Conservative MEP Daniel Hannan, while the Cato Institute think tank is one of a number of right-wing libertarian organisations funded by the Koch Brothers \u00e2\u20ac\u201c prominent supporters of the extremist \u00e2\u20ac\u015b<a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tea_Party_movement\">Tea Party<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 movement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The plans were drawn up in consultation with other conservative think tanks in both the US and UK whose funding is often opaque.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>These include the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Institute for Economic Affairs \u00e2\u20ac\u201c which is under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2018\/jul\/29\/rightwing-thinktank-ministerial-access-potential-us-donors-insitute-of-economic-affairs-brexit\">investigation<\/a> following allegations that it offered American donors access to UK ministers \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and the Adam Smith Institute, as well as the Heritage Foundation and American Enterprise Institute (AEI) in the US.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Nearly all the organisations involved have links to high offices in the UK and the US, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications?publication_filter_option=transparency-data\">government records<\/a> showing that the report\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s researchers in the UK have had \u00e2\u20ac\u015b<a href=\"https:\/\/amp.theguardian.com\/politics\/2018\/sep\/18\/rightwing-thinktanks-unveil-radical-plan-for-us-uk-brexit-trade-deal-nhs?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other&amp;__twitter_impression=true\">exceptional access<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 to former Brexit minister David Davis, international trade minister Liam Fox and other Tory ministers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fox has also spoken multiple times at the AEI and the Heritage Foundation, a number of whose staff and policies have been taken up by the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The blueprint says it details the \u00e2\u20ac\u015bideal UK-US free trade deal\u00e2\u20ac\u0165, one that would be \u00e2\u20ac\u015bmore liberalising than any other free trade agreement in the world\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The deal would entail ending tariffs, loosen oversight of multinational corporations and pave the way for downgrading regulations on pesticides, hormones in meat, chlorinated chicken, GM foods and chemicals in cosmetics.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The IFT\/Cato report also acknowledges that some of its proposals would be met with outrage, stating that \u00e2\u20ac\u015bhealth services would benefit from foreign competition, although we recognise any change to existing regulations would be extremely controversial\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite assistant general secretary Steve Turner said the UK\/US trade deal envisaged by the IFT and the Cato Institute and their Tory supporters was \u00e2\u20ac\u015bfrankly terrifying\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThese plans are what lie beneath the jingoistic patriotism of those in the Tory party who are set on a hard <a href=\"unitebrexitcheck.org\">Brexit<\/a>. Their sycophantic \u00e2\u20ac\u0098Make Britain Great Again\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 ideology cares nothing for the people of this country but is all about unleashing laissez faire capitalism on steroids. Workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 rights, environmental rights, healthcare rights, consumer rights \u00e2\u20ac\u201c they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re all wrong according to the Brexiteers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIf they get their way we would see the NHS destroyed from the inside, our labour market become even more dominated by low paid insecure work, our food and environmental standards plummet and our economy repurposed to even better serve the interests of the super rich.
