{"id":16305,"date":"2018-09-24T16:23:55","date_gmt":"2018-09-24T15:23:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=16305"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:58:13","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:58:13","slug":"schools-labour-philippa-marsden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=16305","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Education for the many&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite delegate Philippa Marsden today (September 24) spoke in support of a composite on the school system at Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s conference.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bEducation must never be left to market forces,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe know that it is education that has the ability to change people\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s lives, unlock their potential and empower them to make a difference in this world.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAccess to good quality education is a human right and it is one that benefits the whole of society,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Philippa added.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u015bEducation is also a great leveller. It breaks down the hidden walls of class and empowers people to take control of their lives.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She highlighted the vital role teachers and school staff play as the \u00e2\u20ac\u015bconduit for that learning for our young people\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 as they work alongside staff in local authority education departments.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThey are the professionals that understand that vital role and that responsibility,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThey are also the people responsible for safeguarding our children, inclusion and making sure that no child is left behind.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Philippa criticised such crucial roles being cut out \u00e2\u20ac\u015bthrough ideological market changes to schools &#8212; academies, grammar schools and free schools.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As a councillor in Caerphilly and cabinet member for education and achievement, Philippa hailed the Welsh Labour Government which she said has ensured that Wales has not suffered at the hands of privatisation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe do not have academy schools,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she pointed out. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIn Wales local authorities are in control of school matters. What is happening in Kent would never happen in Wales.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIn my authority and all across Wales our priority is inclusion,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She highlighted that in the last 12 months in Wales, two new schools have opened. The government there has invested \u00c2\u0141110m back into school infrastructure, has secured substantial funding to support Welsh language education and has greatly increased local childcare provision.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe work tireless to do the best for our disadvantaged and vulnerable children,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she added. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt is shocking that in Kent these same children are being excluded. Shame on those academies.
