{"id":16321,"date":"2018-09-25T12:00:04","date_gmt":"2018-09-25T11:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=16321"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:58:12","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:58:12","slug":"govt-must-get-carillion-abandoned-hospital-built-for-liverpool-asap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=16321","title":{"rendered":"\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Get a grip\u00e2\u20ac\u2122"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>The government must step in and make sure construction on a half-built hospital that is delayed because of the Carillion disaster is completed, Unite said yesterday (September 24).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A protest by Unite outside the Royal Liverpool Hospital came as the union submitted a motion to the Labour Party conference calling for the government to take direct control of the project.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Work stopped on the hospital after the collapse of outsourcing giant Carillion earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Speaking outside the hospital, Unite assistant general secretary Gail Cartmail said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe people of Liverpool need public money so that this much-needed hospital can be built.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Serious message <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is a symbolic protest but with a serious message. It is shameful that we have to plead for public investment so this hospital can be built.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cartmail said it was a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bscandal\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 that work on the project had been stopped because of the mismanagement and greed of Carillion\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s executives.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She added, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIf what has happened is not illegal, then it should be.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The protest was also attended by shadow health secretary Jon Ashworth who said the question mark hanging over the hospital\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s completion is an \u00e2\u20ac\u015babsolute shambles\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe cannot have a hospital that is 80 to 90 per cent completed just stalled and mothballed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bMinisters have a responsibility to get a grip here and get this hospital built for the people of Liverpool.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIf there is a Labour government in the coming weeks\/months we would get a grip of this situation.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Pressure<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Unite leader Len McCluskey urged people to write to health secretary Matt Hancock to pressure him into ensuring the hospital is finished.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>McCluskey added, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bPlease also sign the <a href=\"https:\/\/you.38degrees.org.uk\/petitions\/fund-the-completion-of-the-royal-liverpool-hospital-61?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=tweet&amp;utm_campaign=19_9_2018_&amp;bucket=twitter-tweet-19_9_2018_\">petition<\/a> calling on the government to fund the completion of the Royal Liverpool.
