Unite assistant general secretary Gail Cartmail called for justice following\u00c2\u00a0construction giant Carillion\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s collapse in a speech at the Labour Party conference today (September 25).<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She outlined the disaster of \u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u015bthe biggest corporate collapse in UK history\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 which left 3,000 workers without jobs and thousands more working in its supply chains \u00e2\u20ac\u015bthrown on the scrap heap”.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Beyond job losses, Carillion\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s collapse in January has left dozens of construction sites deserted.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bHere in Liverpool not only did building work stop in January,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Cartmail said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bbut a desperately needed new Royal Liverpool hospital has been mothballed and it is 18 months overdue this Sunday and there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s still no plan to get it built.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

She highlighted the recent scandal of unexplained cracks in beams at the Royal Liverpool hospital site, as well as cladding found on the building that didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t pass fire safety tests.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bBefore Carillion went bust, the hospital trust asked if the cladding was safe and they said yes,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bBut of course, they lied.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bCarillion was built on lies,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Cartmail went on to say as she pointed out that projects such as the Royal Liverpool Hospital which were losing millions were on paper shown to be in profit.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWhen Carillion went bust they had liabilities of \u00c2\u01417bn and had just \u00c2\u014129m left in the bank,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she added.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Another key lie in the Carillion saga is that the taxpayer wouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t foot the bill for its collapse.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But now it has been revealed that the auditors PwC will earn \u00c2\u014150m to disband Carillion, much of which taxpayers will have to pay for.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite has now discovered that because Carillion went into compulsory liquidation and all of its workers had to be made redundant \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and lose their continuity of employment \u00e2\u20ac\u201c even if their jobs were transferred, we the taxpayers have picked up that bill of another \u00c2\u014165m,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Cartmail explained.<\/p>\n

This was gleaned from a recent Unite Freedom of Information request<\/a>. Unite research has also found that taxpayers will have to pick up the bill of several of Carillion\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s key strategic projects left unfinished including the Royal Liverpool Hospital and the Midlands Metropolitan Hospitals \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a bill that is expected to exceed \u00c2\u0141100m.<\/p>\n

Cartmail called on conference to channel their anger at this injustice that has ruined lives and cost us taxpayers so much.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bDespite the millions we have paid; despite the lies; despite the misery of workers losing their jobs \u00e2\u20ac\u201c no one has been charged.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIf no one broke any laws, then we need new laws \u00e2\u20ac\u201c someone must be guilty here,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she said to thundering applause in a packed conference hall.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Cartmail called for justice and accountability \u00e2\u20ac\u201c which Unite has held must include a full public inquiry and criminal investigations.<\/p>\n
