The Labour party must fight tooth and nail for a Brexit in the interests of ordinary working people.<\/p>\n

This was Unite assistant general secretary Steve Turner\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s message as he spoke in support of a composite on Brexit at the Labour Party conference today (September 25).<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He told conference that they must \u00e2\u20ac\u015brecognise that while a majority of Labour voters and trade unionists voted to remain, many didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAcross our nations millions feel abandoned in a rapidly changing world,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Turner said these millions feel \u00e2\u20ac\u015bbetrayed by a political elite that doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t speak to or for them\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 and that they also feel \u00e2\u20ac\u015bleft behind in communities starved of investment and battered by austerity\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bA perfect storm has divided our nations,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said of the conditions that prompted the Brexit vote.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s our job to step up and make history — to create the conditions to deliver a socialist Labour government.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Turner said that only Labour can \u00e2\u20ac\u015bremove Tory red lines and engage constructively to secure access to the single market and membership of a customs union that protects jobs and investment\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He said that it is only Labour too that has the \u00e2\u20ac\u015bvalues to protect long fought for protections for citizens, consumers and the environment\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 and that it is the only party that can secure a deal that protects peace in Northern Ireland and ensures no restrictions between Gibraltar and Spain.<\/p>\n

What\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s more, Turner said, it is only Labour that can \u00e2\u20ac\u015bbuild the homes we desperately need, invest in public services, regulate the labour market\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 and end the exploitation of migrant workers.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bA Brexit without Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s answers to genuine fears and concerns will only add to a deep rooted crisis of belonging and identity in our nations, fuelling a growing and dangerous far right,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he warned. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe demand a Brexit that works for the many not the few.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Turner argued that at a time of Tory government disarray, when they \u00e2\u20ac\u015breturn from Brussels with no deal\u00e2\u20ac\u0165, or a deal that fails Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s six texts, the party must seize the opportunity.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThat is our moment,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur moment to demand they step aside \u00e2\u20ac\u201c our moment to send a broken government back to the country in a general election.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Turner argued if the \u00e2\u20ac\u015bthe Tory benches aren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t brave enough to do that \u00e2\u20ac\u201c to stand up to the Johnson Moggs; if they fail us\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 then the party must \u00e2\u20ac\u015bdemand they go back to the people with a vote on the deal\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAnd conference that is not a second referendum,” he clarified. “Despite what [shadow Brexit secretary] Keir Starmer might have said earlier, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a public vote on the terms of our departure. We need to heal the wounds of Brexit, not reopen them.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOnly our movement \u00e2\u20ac\u201c united with a socialist Labour government \u00e2\u20ac\u201c is capable of doing that, ” Turner concluded as he called on delegates to support the Brexit composite.<\/p>\n
