{"id":16403,"date":"2018-09-27T15:20:44","date_gmt":"2018-09-27T14:20:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=16403"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:58:12","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:58:12","slug":"corbyn-brexit-warning-may","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=16403","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Make way for a party that can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Jeremy Corbyn said a no deal Brexit will be a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bnational disaster\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 that he will work to avoid as he met with EU officials in Brussels today (September 27) to discuss what would happen if Labour took over the negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The comments come a day after Corbyn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Labour Party conference speech, in which he said the party\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s MPs will vote down any Tory-negotiated deal if it damages jobs and living standards \u00e2\u20ac\u201c an occurrence that is likely to happen.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Following the speech, Unite said the public had heard from \u00e2\u20ac\u015ba prime minister-in-waiting, one that is leading the only party capable of putting their interests and that of the country first &#8211; and that party is Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Corbyn was in Brussels at the request of chief negotiator Michel Barnier to discuss Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s positions on Brexit with senior EU officials, who are concerned about the fragility of Theresa May\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s government.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>They are reportedly worried about the potential for the Tories\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 shambolic handling of the Brexit talks to result in a deal that is rejected by Parliament or the UK crashing out of the EU and are seeking to explore how Corbyn would handle negotiations in the event of a Labour government coming into power.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Perilous state\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a statement released before the meetings, Corbyn said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWith just weeks of negotiating time left, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s clear that UK-EU Brexit talks are in a perilous state.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bTime is running out and companies are losing patience with the absence of any clarity from the government.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bCrashing out of Europe with no deal risks being a national disaster. That is why I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m meeting EU officials today, and I will be urging them to do all they can to avoid a \u00e2\u20ac\u0098no-deal\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 outcome, which would be so damaging to jobs and living standards in both the UK and EU countries.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, even if Theresa May manages to achieve a deal with the EU, the chances of getting it through Parliament are looking increasingly slim.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Civil war <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Highlighting the civil war tearing the Conservatives apart, former home secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/theresa-may-warned-40-tory-mps-would-vote-against-canada-brexit-deal_uk_5bac9806e4b091df72edc88c\">Amber Rudd<\/a> said yesterday that 40 Tory MPs would vote against a Canada-style trade deal if Theresa May put one before the Commons.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, hard line Tories will vote against any version of May\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s softer Chequers proposals if the Prime Minister manages to achieve a deal with the EU based on those.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, Corbyn told conference delegates that Labour MPs would vote down any plan that fails the party\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitebrexitcheck.org\/opinions\/keir-starmer-six-tests-for-the-brexit-deal\/\">six Brexit tests<\/a> to protect livelihoods and the economy, which rules out both a Chequers and a Canada-style deal.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>During his <a href=\"https:\/\/labour.org.uk\/press\/jeremy-corbyn-speaking-labour-party-conference-today\/\">speech<\/a>, Corbyn told delegates he had a message for Theresa May.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIf you deliver a deal that includes a customs union and no hard border in Ireland, if you protect jobs, people\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s rights at work and environmental and consumer standards \u00e2\u20ac\u201c then we will support that sensible deal. A deal that would be backed by most of the business world and trade unions too.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bBut if you can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t negotiate that deal then you need to make way for a party that can.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on Corbyn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s speech, Unite general secretary Len McCluskey said the Labour leader had exposed the Tories for their \u00e2\u20ac\u015bideological zealotry\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 over Brexit \u00e2\u20ac\u201c \u00e2\u20ac\u015ba creed that sees their leading figures line their pockets while lowering the living standards of the rest of us\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Prime minister in waiting\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015b(The public) have heard a prime minister-in-waiting, one that is leading the only party capable of putting their interests and that of the country first &#8211; and that party is Labour,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 McCluskey said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe game is up Theresa May.
