{"id":1642,"date":"2014-09-30T16:06:06","date_gmt":"2014-09-30T15:06:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=1642"},"modified":"2014-09-30T16:06:06","modified_gmt":"2014-09-30T15:06:06","slug":"freeze-fee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=1642","title":{"rendered":"Freeze the fee"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Tomorrow (October 1) members of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) will meet to decide whether to increase the registration fee for nurses by 20 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In order to practice nurses must pay a fee to register. Last year the fee increased from \u00c2\u014176 to \u00c2\u0141100. This year the NMC wants to increase it to \u00c2\u0141120. All nurses must pay this fee every year or they cannot practice.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIn a consultation on fee increases 98 per cent of our members didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t agree with it.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Jane Beach, a professional officer at Unite. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThese workers haven\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t had a pay increase in more than five years and many are struggling as it is.This fee hike will cause further financial hardship.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The fee must be paid in one chunk and falls in the month that the nurse qualified. The NMC are consulting on whether to make the fee payable in monthly instalments but if so this won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t come in to effect until 2016.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The government failed to implement the Law Commission recommendations that potentially would have reduced the cost of their regulation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur members are still reeling from absorbing the last 32 per cent increase in the registration fee, which is basically, a tax on jobs. Without NMC registration you can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t work; it is as simple as that.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Jane Beach.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Health visitors and community nurses will greet the NMC with a giant \u00c2\u014120 note, which they will cut to show their anger at the proposed increase.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bTomorrow\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s protest is designed to drive home the depth of feeling that our members feel on this issue, especially as the NMC has reserves of almost \u00c2\u014110 million in its assets.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 added Jane.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s policy is that there should be a halt on any fee hike until at least March 2016 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and even then, any increase should be linked to the annual pay rise for NHS staff.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Those affected include health visitors, acute and mental health nurses, school nurses and midwives.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tune in to Unite Live tomorrow for the NMC\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s decision on our nurses future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tomorrow (October 1) members of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) will meet to decide whether to increase the registration fee for nurses by 20 per cent. &nbsp; In order to practice nurses must pay a fee to register.
