All-out war over Brexit consumed the Tories as the party began its annual conference yesterday (September 30), with Unite warning that all of the Conservative options for leaving the EU risk living standards and jobs.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The brutal infighting began after former foreign secretary Boris Johnson, who resigned over Theresa May\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s floundering Chequers agreement, laid out an alternative Brexit plan calling for a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bsuper-Canada<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 trade deal just days before the conference started.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Brexit disagreements between Tory big beasts spilled over into public vitriol with Johnson describing May\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Brexit plans as \u00e2\u20ac\u015bderanged<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u0165, while chancellor Philip Hammond attacked Johnson for his lack of \u00e2\u20ac\u015bgrown-up politics<\/a>\u00e2\u20ac\u0165, saying the former London mayor\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s biggest political achievement are \u00e2\u20ac\u015bBoris bikes\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Super-Canada\u00e2\u20ac\u2122: Fantastical proposal <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

As the Tories occupied themselves with hurling insults at each other and debating the merits of Johnson\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s fantastical proposal<\/a> to build a bridge between Scotland and Northern Ireland, Unite assistant general secretary Tony Burke explained why a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bsuper-Canada\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Brexit plan is a non-starter.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bJohnson intends to win support for his proposal for a \u00e2\u20ac\u0098super-Canada\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 trade deal with the EU. (But) it took seven years for the EU\/Canada deal to be done, (it) won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t solve NI border issue and the EU will not just roll over and agree as Johnson suggests.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Burke pointed out that Johnson\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s use of Switzerland as an example of a place where just-in-time manufacturing supply chains \u00e2\u20ac\u201c which are vital to the UK economy and under threat from a Tory-led Brexit \u00e2\u20ac\u201c function outside of the EU is just one aspect of the disingenuousness of his super-Canada plan.<\/p>\n

Burke said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWith due respect to our Swiss comrades they don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have a massive automotive, aerospace and engineering sector. Nor do they have 24-seven production cycles.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Johnson\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s plans were also described as \u00e2\u20ac\u015bna\u0102\u017bve and unrealistic\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 by the manufacturers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 organisation EEF.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

EEF chief executive Stephen Phipson said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bLeaving the EU on such terms would involve investment in technological solutions and infrastructure that would take years to roll out and cost billions of pounds with willing partners on both sides of the Channel.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0098Thousands of jobs at risk\u00e2\u20ac\u2122<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bAs a result, it would put thousands of manufacturing jobs and hundreds of billions of pounds of exports at risk and, at worst, could destroy much of Britain\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s manufacturing base.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister continued touting her deeply unpopular Chequers plan \u00e2\u20ac\u201c much of which has already been rejected by the EU and is threatening to tear her government apart \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and called on both the Tories and Labour to get behind it.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In an interview<\/a> with the BBC<\/em> yesterday, May said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bMy message to the Labour Party is that they should stop playing politics with Brexit and start acting in the national interest.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bMy message to my party is let’s come together and get the best deal for Britain.”<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

However, Unite general secretary Len McCluskey said the Chequers agreement was a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bmess\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 that fails the union\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s tests<\/a> for a Brexit that protects jobs, defends and advances rights and provides a platform for economic and political reform.<\/p>\n

McCluskey said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015b(The Chequers plan\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s) one and only aim is to keep the Tory party together with no thought for the serious issues that a deal needs to prevent\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s too vague to offer the cast-iron protections our members need. It utterly fails to deliver on the promises of the 2016 referendum.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bBluntly, this Brexit fudge fails on all counts. Based on these tests I call on all MPs to reject it when it is put to a vote in Parliament.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n
