The collapse of Carillion in January left half constructed buildings and disrupted public services up and down the country, causing misery for thousands of workers and costing the taxpayers millions.<\/p>\n

Nowhere is the damage the mismanagement of the outsourcing<\/a> giant caused more evident than Tameside in Greater Manchester.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Here the scandal has endangered a disturbing number of services and projects, an investigation<\/a> by the Manchester Evening News<\/em> has found.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

These include plans to refurbish Tameside\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s playgrounds, libraries, an indoor market, leisure facilities, pedestrian crossings, CCTV system, town hall and other council owned buildings.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The future of a proposed \u00c2\u01411m children\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s home is at risk, while a public private partnership between Tameside\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s council and Carillion<\/a> to provide meals for the boroughs schools has been thrown into chaos.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In fact, the council was forced to pause 18 major investment projects because it had to unexpectedly shell out an extra \u00c2\u01419.4m for new builders to complete construction on the local authority\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s headquarters, which had been left half built by Carillion.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On top of the \u00c2\u01419.4m, the council is also on the hook to pay at least \u00c2\u01411m to PricewaterhouseCoopers to clean up the fallout from Carillion.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The extra costs means the council has had to \u00e2\u20ac\u015bre-prioritise their plans for future investment and regeneration\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unite assistant general secretary Gail Cartmail said other local authorities were facing similar choices after being left in the lurch by \u00c2\u00a0Carillion.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe collapse of Carillion is nothing short of a national disaster. The havoc left in its wake at Tameside \u00e2\u20ac\u201c with a host of vital public services and projects now facing the axe and the council forced to fork out millions of pounds \u00e2\u20ac\u201c is being replayed up and down the country,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Cartmail said.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bTaxpayers, workers and service users \u00e2\u20ac\u201c in other words regular working people \u00e2\u20ac\u201c are the ones paying the price for the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s obsession with doling out public contracts to privateers who are more interested in filling their pockets than doing their jobs.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bGreed was what motivated Carillion\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s board and it was greed that brought the whole sorry fiasco crashing down on everybody else\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s heads.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Calling for a public inquiry and criminal investigations \u00e2\u20ac\u015bat the very least\u00e2\u20ac\u0165, Cartmail said that if what happened at Carillion \u00e2\u20ac\u015bwasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t illegal it should be\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n

She added, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bBut unfortunately we can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t expect the Tories to learn any lessons from Carillion when bandit capitalism is their modus operandi.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe need a Labour<\/a> government who will regulate to ensure another Carillion can never happen again and make sure public money is spent for the public good.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n
