Health visitors and school nurses face \u00e2\u20ac\u015bsavage\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 cuts Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s shadow health secretary told delegates at the Unite and Community Practitioners\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 and Health Visitors\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Association conference today (October 17).<\/p>\n

Shadow health and social care secretary Jonathon Ashworth revealed that the number of NHS health visitors<\/a> has been cut by 8 per cent over the past year, while school nurses have been slashed by nearly 25 per cent since 2010.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Speaking at the conference in Bournemouth, Ashford told delegates the cuts were a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bbetrayal of our children\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 and reiterated Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s pledge to provide an additional \u00c2\u014125m for health visits for babies at three to four months.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bHealth visitors play a crucial role in caring for vulnerable children and their mothers from the very beginning of life.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe know that early intervention and the first 1,001 days of life are critical in a child\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s development, a fact this government is blatantly turning a blind eye towards.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe truth is that the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s unprecedented cuts are dismantling the country\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s public health system, failing some of the most vulnerable in our society and leaving children\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s services at risk.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s analysis shows that health visitor numbers fell from 8,588 in June 2017 to 7,910 in June this year \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the lowest level since 2012.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The decline has led to a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bhuge variation in the standard care which children receive around the country\u00e2\u20ac\u0165, with 99.6 per cent of babies in Wakefield seen within two weeks, compared to just 44.9 per cent of babies in North Somerset.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, 90.1 per cent of infants in the North East were checked at two and a half, compared to 62.6 per cent in London and 76.9 per cent in the West Midlands.<\/p>\n

Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s analysis also showed that school nurse<\/a> levels have fallen by 24.7 per cent over the last eight years, while community nurses have been cut by 15.4 per cent over the same period.<\/p>\n

Unite said the steep decline in health visitors and school nurses is a \u00e2\u20ac\u015bserious wake-up call\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 for renewed investment in the professions.<\/p>\n

Unite national officer for health Sarah Carpenter said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe damning evidence from the Labour party further underlines what we have been saying for some time \u00e2\u20ac\u201c that there is an urgent need for renewed investment in health visitors, school nurses and community nurses<\/a>.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe know that a robust early years\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 programme for babies and children improves the life chances later on as they move through the teenage years into adulthood \u00e2\u20ac\u201c it is time that the government heard that message once more and acted on it in terms of committing additional resources.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
