{"id":16642,"date":"2018-11-02T15:44:54","date_gmt":"2018-11-02T15:44:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=16642"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:57:54","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:57:54","slug":"google-staff-walkout-sexual-harassment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=16642","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Principled stand&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite demanded Google take action to deal with \u00e2\u20ac\u015bthousands\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 sexual harassment claims, as staff around the world staged walkouts over the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s response to the issue.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/tag\/google\/\">Google<\/a> employees in London, New York, San Francisco, Zurich, Berlin, Delhi and Tokyo protested against sexual harassment allegations that go \u00e2\u20ac\u015ball the way to the top\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 of the global firm.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite, which has been representing a growing number of Google staff in London for the last six months, called on the firm to reform its procedures for sexual misconduct claims.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The walkouts came after a <em>New York Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/10\/25\/technology\/google-sexual-harassment-andy-rubin.html?action=click&amp;module=inline&amp;pgtype=Homepage\">investigation<\/a> detailed years of sexual harassment claims against senior bosses as well as multimillion pound severance payments and company protection for accused executives.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The protest organisers say the cases exposed by the <em>New York Times<\/em> are simply the most high profile from \u00e2\u20ac\u015bthousands\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 of similar claims throughout the multinational company.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Many employees who participated in the walkout left a flyer at their desk that read, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bI\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m not at my desk because I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m walking out in solidarity with other Googlers and contractors to protest sexual harassment, misconduct, lack of transparency and a workplace culture that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not working for everyone.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite national officer for the <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/tag\/it\/\">IT sector<\/a> Louisa Bull lauded the \u00e2\u20ac\u015bprincipled stand\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 taken by Google workers in London and elsewhere over how the company tackles allegations of sexual harassment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe employees are rightly demanding key changes in how sexual misconduct allegations are dealt with at the tech giant, including a call to end forced arbitration \u00e2\u20ac\u201d a move which would make it possible for victims to sue.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bYou can see in the last year that there is a growing wave of disgust generally, as more and more cases of sexual harassment come to light in workplaces across the globe and Unite will assist all those wishing to shine a light on such unacceptable workplace practices.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Unite demanded Google take action to deal with \u00e2\u20ac\u015bthousands\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 sexual harassment claims, as staff around the world staged walkouts over the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s response to the issue. &nbsp;
