{"id":16660,"date":"2018-11-08T16:11:02","date_gmt":"2018-11-08T16:11:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=16660"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:57:53","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:57:53","slug":"save-moorside-nuclear-power-station","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=16660","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Cruel blow&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>The withdrawal of Toshiba from the Moorside nuclear power station project is \u00e2\u20ac\u0098a cruel blow\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 to the north west economy on which thousands of future jobs are depending, Unite\u00c2\u00a0said today (November 8).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite said the government had a major responsibility for Toshiba\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s decision to wind up its NuGen business, which was behind the Cumbrian plant\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s construction, because ministers had adopted \u00e2\u20ac\u0098a hands off \u00e2\u20ac\u2122 approach to UK energy policy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bToday\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s news is a cruel blow to the prospects for the north west economy and the future of thousands of highly skilled jobs in construction and operations, once it was up and running,&#8221; said Unite regional secretary for the north west Ritchie James.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt is our view that it is not too late to revive this project, but it needs the active engagement of government, including the commitment of public money,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bMoorside could be a powerhouse, literally, for the regional economy, and we will work with other stakeholders, such as local authorities, to see that this project eventually comes to fruition.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe hands off attitude of the government has been the elephant in the room and today this \u00e2\u20ac\u0098one step removed\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 approach has come home to roost. This is another example of the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s chaotic attitude to policy making.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite will be seeking an urgent meeting with business secretary Greg Clark to chart a way forward to see what can be done to get this project kick-started again.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIn an increasingly uncertain and dangerous world, there needs to be a joined-up UK energy strategy for the decades ahead to keep the lights on and the wheels of industry turning.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Toshiba had been trying to sell NuGen, after French company ENGIE pulled out. South Korean state-owned company Kepco had been in the frame as a buyer.
