Unite has branded Theresa May\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Brexit promises as \u00e2\u20ac\u015bworthless\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 following the publication of a joint document on Britain\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s post-Brexit relationship with the European Union.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The draft political declaration between the UK and EU \u00e2\u20ac\u201c yet to be ratified by Parliament or European leaders \u00e2\u20ac\u201c makes no mention of \u00e2\u20ac\u015bfrictionless trade\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 and leaves the door open to a damaging hard Brexit, including trading barriers.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It does not guarantee workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 rights and states that Britain will leave the European Atomic Energy Community and the European Aviation Safety Agency \u00e2\u20ac\u201c both vital for industry.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unite assistant general secretary Tony Burke said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe draft political declaration shows that Theresa May\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s promises on frictionless trade, regulatory alignment and workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 rights are worthless.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is a document that could have been written two years ago and to use the prime minister\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s own words \u00e2\u20ac\u0098nothing has changed\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The declaration, published after May made a panicked last minute trip to Brussels yesterday (November 22), was described as \u00e2\u20ac\u015b26-pages of waffle\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt is peppered with phrases such as \u00e2\u20ac\u0098The parties will look at\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 \u00e2\u20ac\u0098The parties will explore\u00e2\u20ac\u2122. What on earth has the government been doing for the last two years?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Blindfold<\/b><\/i> Brexit<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThey have managed less than one page per month since the referendum… This is the \u00e2\u20ac\u0098blindfold Brexit\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 we all feared \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a leap into the dark.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It follows the release of May\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Withdrawal Deal last week, which prompted a near cabinet meltdown.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The release of the declaration today prompted further shockwaves for the government, as MPs from across the political spectrum pledged to vote against it.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unlike the Withdrawal Deal, the political declaration does not contain any concrete policies to do with Brexit.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Instead it lays out a set of non-binding \u00e2\u20ac\u015baspirations\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 and items to \u00e2\u20ac\u015bconsider\u00e2\u20ac\u0165, which will form the basis of trade talks with the EU once Britain leaves in March next year.<\/p>\n

Tony Burke said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bTheresa May remains boxed into political contradictions of her own making, unable to guarantee the frictionless trade needed to secure jobs, while a hard border is threatened through the Irish Sea.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt is a declaration of failure from a prime minister who promises one thing to Tory Brexiteers and another to business, while failing to move negotiations forward in Brussels. The result is a blindfold Brexit and years of uncertainty.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bEmployers should not fall into the trap of expending their goodwill on Theresa May\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s vague promises. This non-binding agreement will be utterly worthless as soon as the real talks begin.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe only certainty it offers is uncertainty itself. It does nothing to stop hard right Tory Brexiteers coming along at a later date to fulfil their fantasy of the hardest Brexit possible.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOnly a permanent customs union with tariff free frictionless trade will secure jobs, investment and hard won workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 rights.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
