{"id":16829,"date":"2018-12-06T15:37:56","date_gmt":"2018-12-06T15:37:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=16829"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:57:51","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:57:51","slug":"airport-workers-strike-against-scrooge-bosses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=16829","title":{"rendered":"Pay justice fights"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Luton airport cleaners are on a week-long strike as part of a campaign against their \u00e2\u20ac\u015bScrooge\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 bosses\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 pay policies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The workers who are responsible for maintaining a safe and clean environment for staff and passengers at <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/tag\/luton-airport\/\">Luton Airport<\/a> are currently struggling to make ends meet on the minimum wage of \u00c2\u01417.83.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cleaning firm Sasse, which was awarded the contract by Luton Airport in April this year and increased its turnover by 21 per cent to \u00c2\u01419m in 2017, have offered a three year pay deal to increase workers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 pay.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>By 2021, however, Sasse workers will still be earning below the real <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/tag\/living-wage\/\">Living Wage<\/a> of \u00c2\u01419.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite regional officer Jeff Hodge said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bBosses at Luton Airport are behaving like Scrooge. By 2021 cleaners at Luton Airport still won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be earning a real Living Wage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWith cleaners out on strike for a full seven days in the run up to Christmas the stoppage will bring cleaning services at the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s fifth busiest airport to a virtual standstill.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The strike, which 100 per cent of members balloted voted for, began earlier this week (December 4) and will finish on Tuesday (December 11).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Unite members employed by Clece Care Services at Luton Airport have suspended their planned strike action while the workers vote on a revised offer from the company.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Toxic combination <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Clece\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Luton Airport workforce, who are responsible for helping passengers with mobility restrictions, including disabled passengers, are on a toxic combination of zero hours and the minimum wage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hodge called on Luton London Airport management to get their \u00e2\u20ac\u015bhouse in order\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The airport announced profits of nearly \u00c2\u014140m and carried almost 16m passengers in 2017 but has refused to intervene to insist its contractors pay at least the Real Living Wage and treat workers with dignity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hodge said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis year alone there have been five separate disputes over pay involving workers (at Luton). The airport is suffering reputational damage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWith healthy profits and growing passenger numbers, Luton and its contractors have no excuse for paying workers below the Real Living Wage.
