{"id":16840,"date":"2018-12-10T15:15:27","date_gmt":"2018-12-10T15:15:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=16840"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:57:51","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:57:51","slug":"unite-government-action-carillion-interserve","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=16840","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Carillion Mark Two&#8217;?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Another Carillion may be on the horizon, Unite has warned, as outsourcing firm Interserve\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s shares plummeted this morning (December 10) and its future hangs in the balance.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Interserve, which maintains a slew of government contracts and operates in schools, prisons, hospitals and roads across the country, revealed on Sunday (December 9) that it would be seeking a rescue plan that may involve issuing new shares.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Interserve is now drowning in a debt pile of \u00c2\u0141500m as the firm\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s shares plummeted by 73 per cent amid news of the rescue plan, which is its second rescue attempt after the firm refinanced its debt in March. \u00c2\u00a0Interserve shares are now being sold for 6.5p each, compared to 100p one year ago.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Notable contracts Interserve runs include a \u00c2\u014135m contract for King George Hospital in east London to provide meals, cleaning, security, waste management and maintenance. In England and Wales, Interserve is the largest provider of probation services for the Ministry of Justice for about 40,000 \u00e2\u20ac\u0098low-to-medium\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 risk offenders.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Overall, Interserve is one of the largest private sector employers in the UK, with a 45,000-strong domestic workforce. Unite, which has called on the government to have a plan in place in case Interserve cannot successfully restructure its debt-laden finances, has about 1,200 members working for Interserve.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite assistant general secretary Gail Cartmail warned that Interserve\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s financial difficulties are \u00e2\u20ac\u015banother dire warning of the dangers of outsourcing public services for private profit\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe could be facing Carillion Mark Two,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe mistakes made before the collapse of Carillon in January 2018 appear in danger of being repeated. If so, this could see the hard pressed taxpayer picking up the tab &#8212; yet again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cartmail said Unite supports a temporary ban on Interserve bidding for public sector contracts while it attempts to resolve its financial problems \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a<a href=\"https:\/\/labour.org.uk\/press\/labour-calls-temporary-ban-interserve-bidding-public-contracts\/\"> move that the Labour party has also backed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Responding to today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s\u00c2\u00a0 news, Labour\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s shadow cabinet office minister Jon Trickett said\u00c2\u00a0 that \u00e2\u20ac\u015bthe Tories\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 outsourcing and privatisation obsession is putting our public services and taxpayers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 money at risk&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe Government must take urgent steps to ensure all existing contracts with Interserve are reviewed and that they are prevented from bidding for public sector contracts until they have proved they are financially stable and there is no risk to the taxpayer,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cartmail agreed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe moral is that public services should be provided by the public sector, as the record of these outsourcing behemoths has been woeful \u00e2\u20ac\u201c it has been proven to be the road to nowhere,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She called for public inquiry into Interserve, following on from the union\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s call for a public inquiry into Carillion, which collapsed earlier this year and saw key government services and projects disrupted and thousands of people made jobless.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe will be monitoring developments very closely and be giving our members maximum support in the coming days,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 Cartmail added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Interserve\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s failing finances is the latest example of what Cartmail called \u00e2\u20ac\u015bthe government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s unhealthy obsession with outsourcing\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The assistant general secretary gave another recent example \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the fate of Ministry of Defence (MoD) firefighters who are now in limbo after the government pushed to privatise the service. The contract was first awarded to outsourcing firm Capita \u00e2\u20ac\u201c which has also been plagued by financial problems \u00e2\u20ac\u201c until rival<a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/mod-firefighters-capita-serco-contract-suspended\/\"> Serco challenged the decision in July<\/a>.
