{"id":1687,"date":"2014-10-01T16:13:40","date_gmt":"2014-10-01T15:13:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=1687"},"modified":"2014-10-01T16:13:40","modified_gmt":"2014-10-01T15:13:40","slug":"mod-floats-unites-boats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=1687","title":{"rendered":"MoD floats Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s boats"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>The ministry of defence (MoD) has awarded \u00c2\u01413.2bn worth of contracts for the maintenance of the Royal Navy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s fleet securing 7,500 jobs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The contract will run for the next five years and will secure jobs across ship building bases at Devonport, Faslane and Portsmouth.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is good news for UK manufacturing and shipbuilding and the decision is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of our members at these bases whose skills are world-class,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 said Ian Waddell, Unite national officer for shipbuilding and aerospace.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The money will also be used to maintain and repair the Royal Navy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s warships and submarines.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Babcock, which manages Faslane Naval base on the Clyde and Devonport Naval Base in Plymouth, was awarded a \u00c2\u01412.6bn contract while BAE Systems, which manages the Portsmouth Naval Base, was awarded a \u00c2\u0141600m contract.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It will secure up to 4,000 jobs at Devonport, more than 2,000 at Portsmouth and about 1,500 at Faslane.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The investment follows the loss of 1,700 shipbuilding jobs with the ending of all naval construction at Portsmouth last year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is a very welcome boost to our members at the Portsmouth shipyard and the city\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s economy.
