Pressured Royal Liverpool Hospital workers <\/span>are shown mana<\/span>ging a flood caused by decrepit pipes \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the tenth in 2018 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c in a new BBC documentary that highlights the impact of<\/span>\u00c2\u00a0Carillion\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s collapse on patients.<\/span><\/p>\n

The footage shows patients stuck in ambulances<\/span> because of the deluge\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>and staff struggling to move a woman to an intensive care ward<\/span> due to the lifts stopping working<\/span>, while<\/span> the nearly-complete replacement building<\/span> that<\/span> Carillion<\/span><\/a> was <\/span>responsible for<\/span> build<\/span>ing <\/span>stands unused nearby.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unite said the documentary<\/span>,<\/span> which<\/span> was filmed at the end of 2018 and\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>shows<\/span> patients and staff struggling to cope<\/span> with conditions<\/span> in the <\/span>dilapidated hospital<\/span>,<\/span> exposed the \u00e2\u20ac\u015bhuman misery\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 caused by repeated government failures over Carillion<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The <\/span>new Royal was due to have opened in March 2017,<\/span> however<\/span> the<\/span>\u00c2\u0141325<\/span>m<\/span> project<\/span> was already a year late when Carillion <\/span>collapsed into compulsory liquidation in January 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A year later, not only has work not yet restarted on the project, but major structural problems have been identified.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The load bearing beams contain major cracks and it <\/span>has<\/span> also<\/span> been<\/span>discovered that the cladding on the hospital is a fire risk. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It is expected that it will cost in excess of \u00c2\u0141100<\/span>m<\/span> to complete the hospital and it will not be operational until 2020, three years late.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unite regional secretary for the North West<\/span>,<\/span> Ritchie James<\/span>,<\/span> said:\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>\u00e2\u20ac\u015b<\/span>(The documentary)<\/span> is exposing the human misery directly caused by repeated government failures.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Asleep<\/i><\/b> at<\/i><\/b> the<\/i><\/b> wheel<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015b<\/span>As a result of the government being asleep at the wheel, patients are facing being treated for over three years in a hospital that is no longer capable of meeting their needs.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u015b<\/span>Our members working at the Royal are being forced to work in impossible conditions and are still somehow providing exemplary care to patients.<\/span>\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Citing the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s failure<\/span> to monitor the project<\/span> when it was active<\/span> and<\/span> subsequent failure to ensure the work was not delayed because of <\/span>Carillion\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s<\/span> collapse<\/span>, James cal<\/span>led on the government to spare no effort in getting the hospital built and operation<\/span>al<\/span> as soon as possible. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Laing O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Rourke has been appointed to complete the construction work and Unite is campaigning to ensure that the workers engaged on the project are directly employed (not bogusly self-employed)<\/span> and<\/span> are not placed on exploitative contracts such as operating via an umbrella company<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

James added<\/span>,<\/span> \u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite is in the process of stepping up our campaign with the NHS Trust and Laing O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Rourke to ensure that construction workers are treated fairly, safely and not exploited when work resumes on the Royal.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Unite has launched<\/span> a <\/span>similar campaign<\/span> to ensure workers on the\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>Midland Metro hospital<\/span><\/a> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c also delayed because of Carillion \u00e2\u20ac\u201c<\/span> are treated fairly by any new contractor. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Criminal<\/i><\/b> investigations<\/i><\/b> call<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Unite assistant general secretary Gail Cartmail has repeated<\/span>ly<\/span> called for <\/span>criminal investigations <\/span>into <\/span>Carillion<\/span>\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s<\/span> collapse. <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She said, <\/span>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIf what has happened is not illegal, then it should be.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Last month Unite released a major report <\/span>Ending Bandit Capitalism: Learning the lessons following Carillion\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s collapse<\/span><\/a> which is a blueprint of what the government needs to do in order to prevent future corporate collapses.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Hospital<\/i><\/span> airs on BBC 2 at 9pm tomorrow. <\/span><\/p>\n
