{"id":16966,"date":"2019-01-11T15:38:14","date_gmt":"2019-01-11T15:38:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=16966"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:57:48","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:57:48","slug":"wylfa-nuclear-power-station-at-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=16966","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;On the brink&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite has joined the chorus of concern over the future of the Wylfa nuclear power station.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hitachi, the company behind the new nuclear power station, said \u00e2\u20ac\u0098no formal decision\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 has been made over its future, following a media report that construction would be halted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe believe it may be commercial reasons that are influencing the Hitachi management due to rising costs,&#8221; said Unite national officer for energy Peter McIntosh.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is compounded by the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s stand-offish approach to the formal negotiations with the company which have been dragging on since last June.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe project appears to be teetering on the brink which would be a really big set-back for the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s future energy policy,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bGovernment must take action now, because if the project does not proceed, it will have a devastating impact on the Welsh economy and on the UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s ability to meet its climate change obligations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt is astonishing that when\u00c2\u00a0prime minister Theresa May met her Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe this week that the project was never discussed. This was an abdication of responsibility by Theresa May,&#8221; McIntosh went on to say.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bBusiness secretary Greg Clark needs to take a more active involvement in ensuring the Wylfa project moves forward in a timely fashion. The future energy supply of the country cannot be left to the whims of market alone.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Nikkei Asian Review has reported Hitachi&#8217;s board would be likely to decide to suspend all work on the Wylfa Newydd plant on Anglesey next week.
