{"id":17035,"date":"2019-01-22T15:01:47","date_gmt":"2019-01-22T15:01:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=17035"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:57:47","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:57:47","slug":"royal-mail-land-sale-scandal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=17035","title":{"rendered":"Royal Mail &#8216;Monopoly&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite has slammed the Royal Mail for feathering the nests of shareholders at the expense of staff and consumers after the firm, privatised in 2013, announced this week (January 17) a property deal worth \u00c2\u014122m.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The latest chunk of land the Royal Mail is to sell off measures less than an acre and will be developed into luxury flats by Galliard Homes, a property developer known for building up-market housing. Only one quarter of the 262 flats to be built will be \u00e2\u20ac\u015baffordable\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c defined as anything below 80 per cent market rate \u00e2\u20ac\u201c but the majority will be for the very wealthy. One-bed room flats in the immediate area are up for sale for more than \u00c2\u01411m, according to the <em>Daily Mirror<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Royal Mail is now refusing to disclose the book value of the latest plot of land it sold, which covers the area where the company owned a mail centre site in Vauxhall, south London.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, the company flogged off land part of its Mount Pleasant sorting office in 2017 to <a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/come-clean-call\/\">property developers Taylor Wimpey for \u00c2\u0141193m.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the last few years, the Royal Mail has made in excess of \u00c2\u0141400m from its central London land sales, which Unite fears will only benefit shareholders, instead of being invested in the business to improve the service and benefit costumers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After all, despite poor financial performance \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-46219336\">pre-tax profits tumbled<\/a> by more than half in November \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the Royal Mail continues to deliver eye-popping dividends to its shareholders. Since privatisation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/politics\/royal-mail-shareholder-payouts-hit-12553479\">pay-outs to shareholders have exceeded \u00c2\u01411bn, with a record \u00c2\u0141213m delivered in 2017 alone. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Only 20 per cent of shares are owned by Royal Mail workers and small investors \u00e2\u20ac\u201c the majority of the firm is controlled by large investors such as fund manager Black Rock, which last year was slated to receive a \u00c2\u014113m pay out.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the latest land sale, Unite national officer for the Royal Mail Louisa Bull said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis is another example of the Royal Mail entering into the luxury property market. I am not sure that was the intention of minsters when the Royal Mail was privatised at a knock-down price in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIn this latest sophisticated version of \u00e2\u20ac\u0098Monopoly\u00e2\u20ac\u2122, it is the shareholders who will benefit, when any profits should be invested in improving services for businesses and consumers, as well as seeing that a dedicated workforce have good pay and employment conditions,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she added. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe need greater transparency from the Royal Mail bosses on their property \u00e2\u20ac\u0098wheelings and dealings\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Shareholder revolt<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>News of the latest Royal Mail property deal comes amid controversy over the new CEO Rico Back\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0098golden handshake\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 worth an astonishing \u00c2\u01415.8m, and the outgoing CEO Moya Green\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s departure deal totalling \u00c2\u01412.7m.
