{"id":17226,"date":"2019-02-07T15:29:24","date_gmt":"2019-02-07T15:29:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=17226"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:57:44","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:57:44","slug":"cottam-coal-fired-power-station-shut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=17226","title":{"rendered":"Cottam power station to shut"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite will be exploring alternative employment for the workers who will lose their jobs when the Cottam coal-fired power station in Nottinghamshire ceases generation on September 30.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>EDF Energy said today (February 7) that the decision reflects the challenging market conditions over the last few years and the drive to decarbonise electricity generation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe announcement of this closure has been on the cards for the last 12 months,&#8221; said Unite national officer for energy Peter McIntosh.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt is not unexpected, but it is still a sad day for the workers and their families as this plant has been generating for more than 50 years.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bUnite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s role will be to continue to constructively engage with the EDF management about the redeployment of the more than 150 employees affected,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe will aim to match the skills and aspirations of the Cottam workers with opportunities for redeployment within the EDF \u00e2\u20ac\u0098family\u00e2\u20ac\u2122.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bThis announcement has to be seen in the wider context of creating a low carbon economy.
