And all at the expense of the young.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For the vast majority of pensioners that image is a travesty. And it is a dangerous one because it erects barriers between the generations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The drip-feed of ugly prejudice against retired people is encouraged by the media and by the musings of some so-called \u00e2\u20ac\u015bthink tanks\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Swansea office representatives of the union\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s retired members\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 branch, explained their own very different views.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Clive Owen, 74-year-old chair of the branch (pictured below), points out that many pensioners are destitute. Clive considers himself to be relatively lucky, but he can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t afford a pint at his local rugby club, has not had a holiday for 25 years and has not had a new suit for 20 years. A proud man, Clive also asserts that he certainly doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want to be \u00e2\u20ac\u015bpitied\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-17278\" src=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/clive-oven-heart-unions-retired-1024x711.jpg\" alt=\"clive oven heart unions retired\" width=\"640\" height=\"444\" srcset=\"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/clive-oven-heart-unions-retired-1024x711.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/clive-oven-heart-unions-retired-300x208.jpg 300w, https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/clive-oven-heart-unions-retired-768x533.jpg 768w, https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/clive-oven-heart-unions-retired.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>An ex semi-professional footballer, Clive had a heart attack in his 30s and has suffered coronary problems all his life, recently undergoing an operation to have a pacemaker fitted. The factory he worked at closed during the Thatcher years and he was able to pay off his house with his redundancy money. However Clive has never had a private pension and survives on pension credit, which is meant to cover basic living costs and guarantees a weekly income of \u00c2\u0141250.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bI really don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want to moan, but not all older people are well off. I have to look after every penny,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 says Clive.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Steve Turner, Unite assistant general secretary pointed out that tens of thousands of elderly people die over winter each year, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bnot of natural causes but of desperate poverty\u00e2\u20ac\u0165.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe fight for dignity in retirement is a fight to be won by all trade unionists; for a decent state pension at the end of a lifetime\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s work and a safe, warm, secure and affordable home.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Clive and his comrades believe that older people should be regarded as an \u00e2\u20ac\u015basset, not a burden\u00e2\u20ac\u0165. They point to Age UK\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s estimate that the over 65s contribute \u00c2\u014161bn to the economy through employment, caring and volunteering. So far he has not had to claim extra state benefits, but is worried that the time is fast approaching.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Stevie lives in sheltered accommodation and has found that the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s austerity policies are forcing the council to increase rent and council tax.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Austerity has also meant that services for the elderly are increasingly inadequate or disappearing completely with horrendous consequences for some of the most vulnerable people in our society.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-17280\" src=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/fran-griffiths-heart-unions-retired-1024x748.jpg\" alt=\"fran griffiths heart unions retired\" width=\"640\" height=\"468\" srcset=\"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/fran-griffiths-heart-unions-retired-1024x748.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/fran-griffiths-heart-unions-retired-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/fran-griffiths-heart-unions-retired-768x561.jpg 768w, https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/fran-griffiths-heart-unions-retired.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fran Griffiths, 70, a former clerical worker and a vice-chair of the branch (pictured above), says that women have often fared worse in retirement because many have been forced to work part-time or take time away from work to look after children. And that means lower pensions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Former Labour councillor Dereck Roberts, a 72-year-old retired engineer (pictured below), says that if older people have private pensions, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s because they paid for them during their working lives.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe shouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t forget that we are talking about \u00e2\u20ac\u0098deferred wages\u00e2\u20ac\u2122,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said. Dereck points out that such deferred wages are particularly important because the UK has the lowest state pensions in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Apart from cash, he believes one of the biggest issues is loneliness, especially for widows and widowers. That problem would be made far worse if policy-makers listened to the calls for the abolition of bus passes. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s one of the best things ever done for older people. Have they pulled up the metaphorical drawbridge to enjoy their \u00e2\u20ac\u015briches\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 in pampered seclusion? As far as Unite is concerned, the answer is definitely not.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Clive was awarded a British Empire Medal this year for his tireless work for older people. And he says that retired members form the biggest Unite branch in Wales. It is 5,000-strong and virtually every meeting is full.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur members are very knowledgeable. A lot of them are former shop stewards. I can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t think of an industry that isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t covered,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 says Clive. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bPeople can get a bit of a roasting when they speak at the branch, nobody holds back. Sometimes I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m not sure whether to bang my gavel, or throw it at people!\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The branch has been actively involved in community issues like the Port Talbot steelworks pensions rip-off and the Swansea lagoon saga.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Initially Stevie had misgivings about retired members being placed in a single branch, but he is a convert. Branches with working members can struggle to attract people to meetings.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Twenty eight-year-old regional officer Jo Galazka, works with retired members in Wales, declared herself touched by what she\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d heard. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t hear about this kind of thing often enough,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 she said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Stevie said Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s retired members section is \u00e2\u20ac\u015ba model of integration, activity and engagement.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 It campaigned and organised to secure justice for pensioners while supporting the struggles of Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s industrial and Community membership.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bTheir experience and support for those fighting many of the same battles won by previous generations, is inspirational.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>All four activists agreed that the cause of young people was best served by union membership and a proper Labour government.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And as for the generational divide, Fran summed it up best, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bWe should not be thinking about younger people versus older people; we should be thinking about rich versus poor.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Photos by Mark Thomas<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In part 2 of our I Heart Unions series, we speak to some of Unite&#8217;s retired members about how they&#8217;re still carrying on the fight for their communities through Unite.
