{"id":17441,"date":"2019-02-28T15:18:50","date_gmt":"2019-02-28T15:18:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=17441"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:57:12","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:57:12","slug":"birmingham-bin-high-court-latest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=17441","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Shameful&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>In the latest chapter of the Birmingham bin strike saga, Unite met Birmingham council yet again at the High Court this morning (February 28) as the council now seeks an injunction \u00e2\u20ac\u201c using Tory anti-union laws &#8212; to stop union members from taking lawful strike action.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The court hearing comes as Unite members began a series of ongoing biweekly strikes last week (February 19) in a dispute over secret payments made to workers who did not take part in the 2017 bin dispute.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite argues that as the workers who took part in lawful industrial action were excluded from receiving these bonuses this amounts to blacklisting and the union is calling for their members to be treated equally.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Speaking outside the High Court today, Unite assistant general secretary Howard Beckett said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bIncredibly we find ourselves back in the High Court \u00e2\u20ac\u201c this time the council is attempting to injunct its own workforce who voted overwhelmingly to withdraw their labour by 95 per cent.\u00e2\u20ac\u0165<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bExtraordinarily we have a Labour council using anti-union Tory legislation to try to prevent that democratic voice from its own workforce,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ojnu3cGqwkQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Beckett pointed out that the application to the High Court from the council was made a full 89 days after the original notice to ballot, proving that Birmingham\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s intentions are disingenuous and its case groundless.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Beckett called it \u00e2\u20ac\u015bshameful action on behalf of a Labour council\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 and added that \u00e2\u20ac\u015bhopefully today the court will tell them so.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/U6KGWqVtIkA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>He called on Birmingham council to do the right thing \u00e2\u20ac\u201c reach a settlement and end the discrimination in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bIt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a simple demand,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he said. \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThey made a payment to those who did not go on strike \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a secret payment.
