{"id":17456,"date":"2019-03-01T16:00:28","date_gmt":"2019-03-01T16:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/?p=17456"},"modified":"2020-11-12T12:57:12","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:57:12","slug":"unite-chris-grayling-eurotunnel-resign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unitelive.test.igniteamt.com\/?p=17456","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Disastrous&#8217; no-deal planning"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p>Unite has reiterated its call for transport secretary Chris Grayling to resign after it was revealed today (March 1) that the government has had to pay \u00c2\u014133m to Eurotunnel after excluding the company from its \u00e2\u20ac\u0098no deal\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Brexit planning.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The decision to exclude Eurotunnel has left workers at the company, which provides the fastest and only permanent connection to the continent and which moves millions of tonnes of freight every year, fearing for their jobs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s 350 strong membership at Eurotunnel, are worried that the government\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s awarding of contracts to ferry companies will be used to entice customers away from Eurotunnel.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/unitelive.org\/chris-grayling-eurotunnel-fiasco\/\">As UniteLive reported in January<\/a>, it emerged that the government awarded contracts worth \u00c2\u0141103m to ferry companies Brittany Ferries, DFDS and Seaborne Freight to run additional services in the event of a \u00e2\u20ac\u0098no deal\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Infamously, Seaborne Freight was awarded its contract despite having no ships and no usable harbour at Ramsgate.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s news of the Eurotunnel settlement, Unite national officer for the rail industry Harish Patel said, \u00e2\u20ac\u015bThe only person who still has confidence in Chris Grayling appears to be prime minister Theresa May.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bHis Brexit planning has been nothing short of disastrous and yet again he is costing the taxpayer millions because of his disastrous policies,\u00e2\u20ac\u0165 he added.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u015bOur members still haven\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t had a sensible answer as to why Eurotunnel was excluded from Grayling\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Brexit planning.
